Recent Motorcycle Taxi Ride

Post new topic

Lennerd

At the risk of plagiarism, I tell the story of a recent motorcycle taxi ride:

Pulls into traffic without looking. Check. ☑️

Turns left after pulling into intersection on a red light. ☑️

Runs multiple red lights. ☑️

Drives up onto sidewalk ☑️

Drives several blocks on the wrong side of the centerline of a two-way street. ☑️

Drives a few blocks the wrong way on a one-way street, hugging the sidewalk on the right, but firmly in the left-most lane of the oncoming traffic. ☑️

Turns left in front of an oncoming car, forcing the vehicle to slow down dramatically. ☑️

Drives on sidewalk of a one way street, going the opposite direction of the one-way. ☑️

Gets me there by the shortest possible route regardless of traffic patterns. ☑️

Standard vehicle operating procedure for xe om drivers. If it wasn't so dangerous/terrifying, it would be funny.😯

Mind you, after 7 years riding here I'm guilty of committing the same infractions. I mentioned before that I worry that if I ever return to Canada that my adopted driving style will follow me home.

Welcome to Vietnam : - ) It’s surprising how few accidents actually happen on these streets. I call it organized chaos.

So how much did you tip him?

Lennerd

@OceanBeach92107

I just paid him the agreed-upon fare of 30K VND.

Keep that up and next time you may receive unsatisfactory service...

LOL LOL!!

Lennerd

@OceanBeach92107

There was nothing unsatisfactory about the service and it was the 5th or 6th time using the same driver. 🤣

So your first post wasn't a complaint after all, or you mean, after the 5th or the 6th, that was the first and the last time you drove with that idiot?

@snake77

If you read the replies, you'll see a, *cough* Canadian whose name, "Aidan in  HCMC" we won't mention here, who says in his post that he's adopted all of these, uh, operations in his own driving.

Did it really read like a complaint?

I can now add another maneuver to the catalog of wonderful and previously untested maneuvers:

Turns right from the farthest left lane on a one-way to a two-way street *on a red light,* driving in front of three lanes of stopped traffic who are patiently waiting to go ahead when the light turns green. ✅ (I mean, why wait for the light to be green when there's no real reason for that!)
