Probably will depend much on just how 'crazy' (eg vindictive, estrato level/social status, age, education, intelligence, children involved, family support, jealousy, addictions, etc.) of a Colombian lady friend she is.

You should consult a Colombian attorney experienced in this area.

However, as a general principle, any and all assets acquired by you before the unión libre are not subject to being shared by the other party.

Here's an explanation in Spanish:

You will have to have an attorney opine on whether or not a declaration of unión libre makes any difference or not.  If it was never declared then perhaps some consequences may not be in effect:

Dont worry about it

I gave been married to a Colombian and never divirced, I dont worry about

I was shacked up with one for 2 years afterwards  i dont lose any.sleep

I am with one now for 4 years, and we actually notarized our agreement and I dont worry. She could go after half our furniture..but.it would take 2 years in court to get less than ,$1000 ( that part I talked to briefly with a Colombian lawyer)

If you have nothing, no property or busineses  in Colombia you have nothing to worry about

Stop inventing problems that dont.exist.

You.create unnecessary stress for nothing

Who said anything about US laws?  But everyone knows, or should know, that in Colombia just like in the US, assets acquired before a marriage or unión libre, are not subject to being split up - only assets acquired during the relationship.  Colombian lawyers (presumably) know Colombian law, which governs what would happen in this case of a unión libre.

And I have read a lot of advice YOU have given, as being "terrible naive advise (sic)" as well - basically you advise flouting any and all laws, because some have gotten away with it.  You may not believe it, but there are many honest Colombians who do not try to lie, cheat and steal every opportunity they get.  You have taken the wrong Colombians for your role models, I'm afraid...

The basic law is what goes on in Colombia, stays in  Colombia.

And what goes in in the US, stays in the US

Applies to any country

People want to.make their lives complicated  go ahead

Marraige certificate just a piece.of paper

And if some one wants to go after his assets, they have to do it based on the laws where his asets are located, using a lawyer from that jurisdicción.

Good luck a barrio girl going to.Boise Idaho and trying to proove she was hooked up with a gringo from there

Theres nothing dishonest or bad about what I.just common sense.Why.open a can.of worms for something with an infitisimal amount.of risk
