Hi !!!

I plan to go Sri Lanka for 4 weeks, in solo.

I'm looking for informations for woman traveling alone in SR so I would like to know your own experience of girl living, gong out, maybe traveling in Sri Lanka.

I for my part have travelled for several months solo in India, NZ, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, i lived in Cambodia and at Reunion Island.

Maybe you met lonely traveling woman in SR ?
Or maybe you travel in SR alone yourself ?
How do u feel in the streets, buses, trains .... ?

I wanted to know if I am going to meet the same difficulties as North India for example, country where it is almost incredible that a woman can travel alone and sometimes men think you travel alone because you looking for sex, and sometimes it's a bit heavy !!!!

Or maybe SR is like other countries, like southeast Asia(Thailand, Cambodia) where a woman travelling alone is first a foreigner in the same way as a man who travel alone, so it not make woman more vulnerable than man.

I add that in India i was dressed in a salwar kameez (kind of jellaba + baggy trousers)!

Thx for your answer

seems like u got lot of experience and you know the code of ethics to be conduct , way you dress and how u move with people is almost the same in everywhere in this part of world , just once advice not to plan any trips at night not due to any safety issues, just due to transport issues , but if you are travelling by your own vehicle it will not be an issue , let me know if you need any specific information on travelling here in sri lanka.

Not bad as india but sometimes may be some situations. Better you should find some friend with facebook or from any other community. Then you can have a friend with you by side. Other hand you can travel day time without any hesitation if you can stay inside at night. Sri Lanka is not a better place to walk alone in night time.

AS you are traveling solo,my advice is to avoid staying at cheap places where locals roam around. When they are drunk, they can sometimes be mischievous. Also don't walk alone after dusk. The rules are the same as in the US,Europe and elsewhere.Don't go in dark alleys. If you need any assistance, send me a PM.Good luck!

Well the situation depends on where you are going-which area and if
it is a public holiday, you know what mode of transport you use.Pool
parlours, night clubs are really not safe places to go for women travelling alone.

Going around in cities or villages during day time shouldn't be a problem, provided you are dressed in knee-length shorts or pants. Even public buses / trains / tuk-tuk (check the price before you start) is ok. But afte dark better be indoors or in a hotel.
All the best

After being in Sri Lanka since 2005 with my partner, have returned without her!  as a point o reference we have encountered the following:  She walked home form work one afternoon at around 2pm and a man pulled up in his car and right beside her and was mas***.  2 police officers standing next to us staring at her and make comments in Sinhala about how the white girl had great arse and breasts.  Basically a woman on h own in Sri Lanka unfortunately warrants much caution as much as people here (funny enough some Lankans) advise you it is ok you will get more attention than is comfortable and it will not be a pleasant experience.  There is a newer generation of more liberated women however.....

Hi,

Traveling alone in buses/train for women during day time is quite normal, many women do. There are lots of foreigners too useing public transport, even with surfboards etc. It's better to avoid traveling after 8pm.
have fun

Hi littlekaro.

I would like to ask, were you in Sri Lanka? and if you were, can you tell me something about your trip? because I would like to go alone. thanks your answer. ;)

makhma

I am from Maldives and often in Colombo and I also travelled in Sri Lanka.
For girls / ladies it will be quite safe to travel during day time. It's better to avoid night traveling especially mid and late nights. Clubs and bars may also not be safe to be alone. If you are booking cheap accommodation it's better to rely on known or registered sources such as Agoda or a Air port counter.
If you need more information please mail makhma /!\ I AM A STUPID SPAMMER /!\ com

Hi if you are going out on day time no matter what you dress. SL is highly westernize country & people are highly discipline & willing to assist you any time. However if you going alone at night please be kind enough to dress a decent apparel.

Also it matters the place you visit, if it is a place with International standard diffidently it should be safe. If it is cheap place kindly don't stay till late. There so many places to see & so many things to do in Colombo.

Thanks

My kind advice to u is: PLS. DON'T TRAVEL ALONE IN SRI LANKA OR ELSEWHERE for that matter. Try to find a good friend prefer4ably a family who is prepared to accompany or arrange a reliable travel companion.

Thanks and regards

Thanks your answers.
Actually I would like to relax in Sri Lanka, so don't want to stay till late. I'll travelling alone, because I need it. :D I don't have afraid, but I think the best way, if I asked about it.
Rila, were you in Sri Lanka? what happened? or where you were, where something happened?
I was alone in Barcelona and Istanbul... and this were my best summer. :D
