But if you want to stay on the safe side of things, ask the receptionist of the hotel, where you are staying at, to check availability for you.  He/she can book your tickets in advance, if it is required.

Update to this post.  I did ask at the hotel and followed their suggestion that I should go to the terminus and book in advance.
     In doing so, I was able to book return tickets, for specific dates and ferry time.  Seats are also reserved.
VINA EXPRESS each individual ticket,(one way) 200,000VND.   Jack

Not just bouncy either.
We made that trip a year ago - the bouncing was one thing, but the noise !

Don't know what it sounded down the rear of the boat,
We here seated, two rows in front of the helmsman's steering area / bridge / box thingy, just behind and above us, right hand side, and when the boat was moving at speed the water hitting the hull sounded like someone with a big hammer trying to punch through the hull !

The 'regulars' who use the boats all the time just sat back, ignored everything, except the free bottle of icy cold water, and either read the newspapers or went to sleep for the trip.

The ride that you and your family took was first class.  To me, aside from all that you mentioned, the smell was terrible...

I hope they changed some of that, for the sake of modernazation.  But, the seat I took was in Russian and the way the ride was managed was pure Socialistic...
