Need an update on the flood in Northern Thailand & the Chiang Mai area

Post new topic

Hello Everyone,

Could someone give me an update on the situation in Chiang Mai and in Northern Thailand?
I am planning a visit in the area for the week of Nov 1st.

- I understand the city is no longer inundated but are the streets, stores and public transportation back to normal yet?

- How difficult is it these days to take buses and trains to visit the rural areas and the surrounding small?

- Should I cancel my trip (in which case I would lose my plane ticket) or is it still worth spending a week over there.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated :)

I am in Chiang Rai not Chiang Mai but the rains have stopped and things are actually starting to cool off a bit at night.  Everything is still very green so it is a great time to visit the North.  Can’t see any reason to cancel.  Why not spend two weeks instead of one, Thailand needs your money.

You may not want to spend a lot of time in Bangkok, however.

I think, at least hope, Chiang Mai and the North has seen the worse of the flooding.

However, getting here might be a problem as they have now CLOSED Don Muang (domestic airport).

PLUS:

Nok Air chief executive officer Patee Sarasin said the airline suspended its services from noon yesterday until Oct 31.

"It may resume flights on Nov 1," he said. "We do not know how much floodwater will flow in. We cannot estimate it. Flight services are suspended until the end of this month because we wonder if Suvarnabhumi (international)airport will be flooded. We would like to suspend flights to monitor flood situations concerning both airports.

'It may resume on November 1st' - very, very, very unlikely.

Hello BlueKnight, I am living in Chiang Mai now, I arrived 1 month ago, the floods in Chiang Mai were 6 weeks ago. Chiang Mai is fully operational and I believe so too is Chiang Rai and the surrounds. I believe all trains from Bangkok have stopped from the last I heard, so only plane travel from Bangkok is possible. Bangkok is still in a bad way, but up here in Chiang Mai the weather is hot, sunny and beautiful. I have friends on the island of koh Phangan, and they have been having frequent rain. Hope this helps. If your trip is for Chiang Mai, no problems, all good. Ciao Cello
