Hi Folks, do most places in the DR take traveller's checks? How about Grocery stores?

Almost NO place will accept traveler's checks. They are just about useless here. If you can find someone to do so there will be a huge fee (generally 20%) and you will get a bad exchange rate on top of that. My advice is to leave them at home.

If you don't like taking cash then use your ATM cards here. You will get a good rate on the exchange (usuallly) as well. However do notify your bank you are traveling here or they will put a hold on you card the first time you use it fearing fraud.

Bob, that's great advice, thank you. We ran into the same thing when we travelled to Panama a couple of years ago.
