Hello Fardeen. I'm thinking of moving to England with my girlfriend. We are both just U.S. citizens, and I am unsure of the type of visa I need to get. We do not have offers of work or offers of study there, nor do we have relatives who live there (that we know of at least). If you could help me out, it would be greatly appreciated!

It is more or less impossible for a US citizen to move to the UK unless they have been offered work. There are some avenues available, but they are for people like investors and entrepreneurs with more than a million dollars available to spend on starting a business in the UK, or world-famous scientists, artists and sports people. Search for the UK Border Agency website, which explains all the different visa categories that are available.

If you find jobs in the USA and save up for a while, you would be welcome to come on vacation. British hotels and restaurants would gladly accept every dollar that you can earn, and then some, in exchange for their hospitality.

Hy Fardeen,

My name is Alexandra, I am 27 years old. I came from Romania and I am looking for a job in Uk.
I speak and write in 3 foreign languages (English, French and Spanish), I have very good IT skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook).
I am a nice person, dynamic and organised, helpful and polite and I can learn very fast new things.

At the moment I live in Romania and I am available from the 1st January 2014 (due to transitional restrictions imposed by the European Commission for Romania).

I would like to ask you about the formalities of getting a job there(the interviews, what paper they asked when you get a job), some useful information because when I will arrive there I don't want to be forced to come back for a paper or others things like that.

Thank you very much in advance and I wish you a nice day.

Kind regards, Alexandra

Hello Alexandra,

The process of getting a job in England really depends what kind of job it is. You MUST be able to show a passport or other evidence that you are allowed to work in the UK, and if you have any degrees or diplomas you should get the certificates translated into English.

Otherwise, you can find good advice and job advertisements on this site: prospects.ac.uk

Alexandra_Vlad

Hi,

Thank you for your answer.
All my diplomas and certificates are already translated into English.
What other documents are required by employers in the UK. I want to be ready in time to not have to make more trips by plane to bring them from Romania.
For example I saw that many of them require the criminal record, it can be obtained from the Embassy of Romania in the Uk?

Thank you and have a nice week-end.

Voyager_2002

I suggest that if you see an interesting job advertised you telephone the employer and ask...

The only law is that you MUST show evidence that you are allowed to work in the UK (passport or visa or identity card from an EU country), and that if the job involves working with children or vulnerable adults then then employer MUST check your criminal record. I have no idea how that works for people from another country: I suggest that you ask the Romanian embassy in the UK or visit their website rather than making assumptions.

Thank you very much for your help.
In this moment I am appling for some jobs.
I wish you a nice evening.:)

Voyager_2002

Thank you Alexandra, and good luck.

Do you know which part of the UK you will come to?

Alexandra_Vlad

Thank you!
Well I would like to come in London ,but I will follow my future job location.

I plan to come in January even if I won't find a job untill then (If there won't be any transitorial restrictions of cours because I want to be perfect legally there).
I' ve applied for many jobs,I had some requests for interviews but I find it difficult to come over for an interview, then come back in Romania  and then again for another interview, it is to expensive for me.So I have some employers that they put my application on hold and they asked me to contact them when i will arrive there. It will be much more easy for me to have the interviews.

hi!

i am dreaming of going canada eversince. to live there and to work, but im just an ordinary individual, i dont have any family in canada, no permanent job and i've been moving to country by country. now i'm here in africa, what kind of visa im going to apply for canada.i dont have any job offer from there.

thak you,
ace

Voyager_2002

Sorry Ace, it is just not going to happen.

There are basically three ways you could get a visa to live in Canada (or most other developed countries): marry a citizen; have some really high-level skills and qualifications so that a company there will certify that they need you to do a certain job and cannot find a citizen to fill that vacancy; or prove that you have several million dollars to invest in a business there. If those things applied to you, you would not be asking for help here.

The best advice I can give you is to stop dreaming of the impossible and make the best life possible for yourself in any country where you can legally live and work.

hi,

thank you for the reply...yes,you are right, it's very impossible, i better face the reality.

keep it up and more power!
