Advice needed on job offer / living expenses / lifestyle in Abu Dhabi

Post new topic

Finn9

Hello,

My partner has been offered a lecturing position at a university in Abu Dhabi, starting Jan 19th however we do not know whether to accept.
Our priorities are to A) experience living and working in another country and B) to save money.
The contract includes accommodation, flights and medical for him but as we are not married yet. We will get married in February once we are there.

My questions are:
1. Given accommodation costs (sans electricity and phone) are covered, is a monthly salary of 14,500 dirhams between us enough to have a comfortable life AND save about 50%?

2. Is there a cheap place I can regularly go to the gym or swim in Abu Dhabi? (I am a female if that makes a difference)

3. I am a painter. Does anyone know of any galleries in AD supporting emmerging artists? My paintings are mainly depicting women / females or animals - nothing crazy.  Are these topics ok for viewing there?

Any other information regarding life as a Western woman in Abu Dhabi is much appreciated :)

Many thanks,

Finn

Hi Finn!

Although I don't live in Abu Dhabi, but I will try to answer your questions as I got some information from my friends living there!

Your priorities:
A) I believe, UAE is one of the best place for living and working experience! Therefore, I'm sure that you will have a good time! With more than 200 nationalities as residents and a tax-free life!! :)
B) Well, you can have a good saving in UAE but it purely depends on your lifestyle as there is no limit here! ;) (at least, there is no limit of luxury in Dubai)

Your questions:

1) Accommodation is very expensive in Abu Dhabi! normally expats (specially from Asia) are spending a big amount of their income in accommodation; however, in your case, since it is provided by the employer, therefore, I believe that there is no issue with that! The salary you mentioned is good to have a decent life in Abu Dhabi but as I told you that it depends on your luxury that how much you save in the end of the day! Therefore, I cannot guarantee 50% saving but I can comment that the package is good enough for a decent life of a couple! :)

2)Ofcourse, you will find a lot of places like that! :) There are  nice swimming pools and gym in the apartments itself in Dubai. I am not sure, but I guess, you can also find an apartment in Abu Dhabi with the same facilities! :)

3) You cant really have a good information about your profession once you land here as you will meet several people in different professions! The more you meet, the more information you get! :)

I hope that I tried to answer all your questions! In case of any other information, you are more than welcomed! :)

Good Luck !! :)

I agree with James!

I lived in Abu Dhabi for 2 years and i loved it! It might get bit boring in the beginning but you can always go on a walk around and so much to discover! Once you will make friends, you will have a great experience meeting people from all over the world, discovering their culture, food and traditions!

Your mentioned sallary is good enough to have a decent plus luxury life depending on what your limit is..Not sure if you can save exactly 50% though but for sure you can save some..

Life as a western woman would not be hard at all as I have seen and met lot of single working western woman there and its completelty safe..(you might get bit weird looks from labor working class male population but hey its just the stare lol)

Good luck for everything and enjoy the change!

Depends what kind of lifestyle you want to lead. I could quite easily blow 14,500 Dhs in a night....

I reckon you'll survive on the salary but you won't save much, if any.
