Hi, I lived 4 years in China and due to a busy job and too many expats arround me I had a similar problem. Long time I did not pick up much, tried private teachers, was tired after the job, did not do homework etc. - all in all it seemed to be useless.

Then I tried to avoid to be always with the expats and immediately was in the middle of the language problem. What helped a lot was writing SMS in Pinyin. By looking for words, translating and typing them, I improved a lot.

Sounds funny, but worked!

With bluetooth and online dictionary (e.g. mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php) it is easier and faster... - wish you good luck!
