Can some one please explane?HMC is the name of what use to be Saigon (wikipedia)so why have both these names and different forums?confusing but Im sure there is a reason?

Saigon,Hochiminh city now, is a big city at the south of Vietnam
I'm Hochiminh citizen and I don't know why there are 2 forums too :|
But I also call this city by 2 names Hochiminh city or Saigon though Saigon is no longer exist
dear!

I did hear different. Ho Chi Minh is the whole of the city now. Saigon refers to only some of the districts (not really sure which). Saigon is still commonly used - even in government language (Airport, Train station ....)

Anatta

Officially it is HCMC, but many people still call it by its former name, Saigon. Some call the inner city (in particular District 1) Saigon while calling the metropolitan city HCMC, though the practice is not consistently adopted.

Why? various reasons and you can argue until the cows come home.

A similar case I can think of is Leningrad vs. Saint Petersburg in Russia.

Previously before liberation, SOuth Vietnam's capital is called Saigon. After liberation, its changed to HCMC. But people in the south still use Saigon as the name.

I know a few old people in the south still cannot accept the current regime....

I was actually surprised, that that (as far I can notice) is not really true.
There are people everywhere, in every country, who dislike the the own governmental.

I personally not only dislike them - and that are the 99%.
Whilst here in Vietnam, I am actually surprised, how people, especially the poor and really poor - have trust in the current government.

Especially in some meters distance - the neighborhood- no money for food, no money for feeding the kids proper or send them to school - but the hang out their flag with proud - and after, they clean it more than "gold" for Tet.

And those flags are hanging on the sheds (hoods) of wood and or bamboo (no, most of them I would not even calla a garage).

I know actually - that house (shed) flagging is not ordered or enforced by the government - in opposition to the street flagging, which is here (some miles around)  not really happening.
I still prefer to let the politicians here do their job, and I do mine.

I believe its because they've travelled so far to liberate or unify the country, they wouldnt want any more war. They're proud to be Vietnamese. Its just the regime.

I also feel that expatraites gained the upper hand in doing business in Vietanm.

IGNORANCE.

Poppycock!  See what happens when I abandon my posts?!

They should tell the old people at the airport to change their airport code, because it's currently SGN.

How about those folks at Saigon Bank?, especially the HANOI branches.

Those fine people down at Hyundai Saigon?

Ever got the munchies and took a cruise on over to Saigon Tacos for a bite to eat?

Half of the people at Hotel Magestic Saigon are old and unaccepting of the current "regime", which is a word that carries negative connotations BTW, and the other half aren't:

Hotel Majestic Saigon
1 Đồng Khởi, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The city is known by 2 names.  Officially, it's Ho Chi Minh City.  Some people, including many that I met during my time in Hanoi, refer to it as Saigon.

I agree.

hoanghai549

Hochiminh at now is Saigon.

zirhk3355

Like to say that Saigon was renamed only in 1975 so its natural that the people still remembers it.

IMO its just a honest issue of not getting used to the name yet, and since nothing to do with acceptance, liking the current regime or not...

Hello all,

For those of you who are still hung on this topic, HCMC was an effort to introduce south Vietnam to "what we know today," much like what Japan tried to do to the Korean penisular, in the 40s.  But, like the south Koreans, much of south Vietnam resisted, and that is where we are at today.  For the clowns on this forum, who are trying to seperate Saigon from HCMC, all I ever wrote was "IGNORANCE."

Get to know the joint a little bit, before you sound off.  Do it too prematurely, all you will ever do is make a mockery out of yourself!!!

Warm regards,
Howie

I'm not sure what you may consider a "premature" opinion, and any opinion that differs from your's should not be branded as "ignorance."  People are entitled to express their thoughts.

Wild_1

Hi Perry88,

When I typed the word "premature," I meant it for what it is!!!  Look it up, if necessary.

Hi Perry88,

Everybody is entitled to his or her own way of thinking.  I never want to stop that.  But, when he or she fails to do his or her homeworks and start to mouth off, that is when he or she begins to sound silly.  Read it up, man!!!  Spend a little time on the topic, as oppose to typing up junks...

There are millions who know about the fact that I had just written, but did not sound off.  Please give them their due respects.  I am just trying to stop folks from making fools of themselves.
