There is nothing called a temporary or a permanent visa. The correct names are Visit & Resident visas.

In general what they do is to issue a visit visa (45/90 days max usually). That is actually the probation period. After that if they are happy with your performance, they get a Resident visa issued to you.

There is another visa type called multiple-entry visit visa. In that case  the visitor has to cross the border every 45 days (or whatever mentioned in the visa) and get back; and this sort of visa gets renewed. The max duration is limited however, and in most cases not more than 6 months.

Some companies do but i don't think generally it's possible to bargain with them on the visa type. In any case, if the probation period didn't go well, they have the right to deport the employee no matter what his visa type is.
