How long to process a visa?

I'll only be in the US for a short time. Need to know if I have enough time to mail in my passport and get it back before my departure date.

Also, which consulate is best for Illinois residents?

The Los Angeles consulate has a pretty good reputation for getting your visa back quickly. Last time we used them (about 9 months ago for my son) we got his passport back in about 2 weeks from when we sent it. And that tracks with what we had experienced in the past.

I used to live in Arizona and used the Los Angeles consulate. Mine was also 2 weeks from submittal in mail and delivery back at my house.

But the Los Angeles consulate has very good and curteous service. I would frequently call them and ask questions. They were very patient and clearly answered all my questions. I also dealt with the Paraguayan consulate in Mexico DF and they were also very curteous and helpful.
