Hello all, am just moving to Oslo now to be with my boyfriend. He already lives/works there.

I am looking for a job currently but mainly looking for friends so that I have my own social network rather than relying on him.

I am interested in coffee/chats, vino/chats, gigs, festivals, dinner movies, learning to ski, the odd shopping trip.

I work as a PA/Secretary and if any advice could be offered regarding job searches that would be great but mainly here to meet friends.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi, have u moved yet? Im 32, moved here a few years ago and love it. Suddenly realised I work with all my friends and would really like to get to know more people outside of work! Let me know if you want to meet up for a coffee :) leanna

Hi Leanna

No, my UK company have asked me to stay on a few weeks more so I am actually there first week in May, very excited!
I start my language lessons in the first week of May too so hitting the ground running. Would love to meet for coffee and chat etc :-) xx

The only website of much use is generally finn.no. Work (the job centre and all the recruitment companies post to this website as well, as well as most companies), housing, shopping (more like a norwegian gumtree), etc.

Good luck with learning Norwegian. As I've found out moving here, my partner is British, and not having an easy time finding work not knowing Norwegian and the lack of a network. Nepotism is rampant here. And if we are to believe the media, there's a massive influx of Spaniards at the moment. Competing with Swedes can also be troublesome for non native speakers due to language/cultural advantages they have.

leannag

Awhh, not long to go.... Where are ur lessons? Very organised :) let me know when u r settled in and we can grab a coffee. Good luck with the move. L

NeilOslo

Hi Cezza/Leanne I also live in Oslo and know a few English females who would be glad to hook up.

NeilOslo

One thing I got when moving to Oslo was the ability to join an expatriate society in Oslo.  It was very expensive though (like everything in Norway... but my company paid for it)  but it was useful to get involved in that as I met some friends there who led me to other friends who led me to other friends...  and I've had a great time ever since.

Cracking Norway is a bit difficult as many people are kind of set in their ways (work->hytte->work->ski->work->hytte... etc.) and don't tend to socialise outside their little groups but once you crack that you are okay... also I found it useful to not underestimate the value in non-norwegian and non-english friends... there are lots of nice people here from all over the world I find.

Although to be honest to do anything in Norway (like go out for a meal and a few drinks) you really need a decent paying job...  I am easily spending about 3 times what i would in UK.. and when I go back to the UK its easy to go crazy buying everyone a drink as I see prices have dropped in some places (£1.69 a pint in my home town).

I'm out for an indian tonight with one of my English friends as it's one of the meals here that is still good quality and reasonably priced (by Norwegian standards).  There are lots of them in Oslo just like UK ;-)

Take care
Neil

Hei Neil, sounds like u had a great start in Norway!  There is no expat society in IKEA. Would really like to meet more 30 somethings for socialising. I only know IKEA people and my boyfriends friends.

I must say, I'm exactly the same when I go home, its  such a luxury to get change from a fiver when u buy a drink :) Would love to know where u go for a good Indian.

NeilOslo

Hi Leanna, There are quite a few good Indians even around Oslo S.  But I think the best one I have been to is in Drammen...amazing food, its quite a big place and a bit surreal with even a belly dancer for entertainment!

Cheers!

JO-town

Hello!  Im Jo, 29 just about to move next week to Oslo to be with boyfriend.  All very excited about learning to ski and eating cinnamon rolls but concerned about lack of girlfriends.  Ive got the whole week off 18 jun so am flexible if you'd like to meet up for a glass of terrifyingly priced wine or aforementioned pastry delights.

Peppi

Hey you guys :) I am a 28 years old girl from Finland and also new in Oslo. Looking for some friends. I really like to meet new people, but I'm too shy to go to a bar/coffee shop alone. And since I am from Nordic countries I can show/teach our nordic activities like skiing :D Looking forward to hear from you :)

Hello,

Just wondered if anyone here actually got around to meeting up? It would be nice to meet some new people.

David

I'm an American filmmaker from Hollywood, and I'm here in Norway, doing a feature and pretty wrapped up in production and travel, but I base out of a small town not far from Oslo, and would like some new pals as well.

I've been in Norway a little while now, and pretty much love it, I'm even used to the high cost of food etc but its been cool. PM me to talk and such first, and if anyones interested in doing film related activities, cafes, cinema, using a sunny day sometime for a picnic, lets do it.

Cheers!

Hello Ceza

Sarahmac5

Hey, just found this thred and am interested to see hoe people have got on moving to Norway! I'm moving to Oslo in August to be with my Norwegian boyfriend too ; it seems like a common thing! Those Viking men are still getting us from Britain after all these years! :p

hibadi

Goodness Gracious Sarahmac5,
I too am going to be in Oslo in August to join my boyfriend. He'll be working and of course I'm nervous about loneliness. I plan on taking language classes but I'd love to broaden my social network. So if you are interested, we could keep in touch?
I'm Carine by the way and I'm 31.

ECS

one thing to check out is if the natives of your homeland have any facebook groups. I found an Americans in Norway group, and although I haven't lived in the US for 8 years, they've been a very welcoming crowd. I'm already looking forward to moving there because they've all been so helpful and excited to meet for coffee once I arrive.

Sarahmac5

Hey Carine!
Yeh it seems to be a commoner thing than I thought! Where are you from? I'm also trying to learn Norwegian, but it's not easy! so will probably look at going to classes when I get there!  Are you looking for jobs? What is your background? Yeh it would be good to build up a social network! :)
