Hello Everyone. My name is Daniel and I'm a new member of this incredibly useful blog/forum.
I humbly ask for someone to guide me with my goal of moving to Malta.
I'm a 34 years EU member national (Polish) currently living in the U.S.A with my wife and our three kids for the last 14 years.
We have a dream of relocating to Malta and start a new life. Everything we read about Malta is fascinating and I can only describe it as Paradise on Earth.
My plan is to move to Malta alone at first and once I'm established (job and home secured), I can then bring my wife and our three kids.
Throught the years, we have saved several thousand euros to help with giving me the courage to make the move.
I would like to start by telling a bit about myself...
I'm a Graphic Designer specialized in web design and I'm currently working as a director of operations for an environmental management company. (nothing to do with designs, so I basically have two jobs). I hold a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a good position at work, but I don't pretend to start right away with a position similar to the one I currenty have here in the US. In fact, I'm not afraid of any job to start with. I would work sweeping the strees of Malta and picking up trash from tourists with a big smile on my face if I have to, as long as it is an honest job that would allow me to reunite with my kids and wife. Obviously, I dream bigger than that and perhaps one day I can open my own business there. To keep it simple: I undersdand that I have to start somewhere.

I am very fluent in both English and Spanish, I understand Polish a little bit but I would like to start studying a new language. (perhaps you can suggest what third language will benefit me more in Malta). We are good, honest people who love being surrounded by other nice and well-intentioned people.
Our intentions for moving to Malta are pure: We want to see our children grow in a save environment, contribute to Malta's economy in any way possible and make good, long-lasting friends.

I'm afraid. I'm very afraid of the unknown and very afraid of being away from my kids and wife for a while. They are everything to me, but this move must be done.
I beg for someone to tell me a little bit about the first steps to take after arriving to Malta like a complete lost and disoriented tourist. My first few question are:

1) Do I need to file for any special permission to live in Malta?
2) What do I need to open a bank account so I can transfer our savings from the USA?
3) is it hard to find a place to live? Perhaps a 3 bedroom apartment?
4) How difficult is it to find employment?

Thank you very much in advance for any tips you can give me.

Hi Daniel,

welcome to our forum.

Most of your questions have been asked and answered in the different sections (job, cost of living, formalities asnd so on). Take a look there first and feel free to ask about anything you don't find there.

My question would be: It sounds as if you are well qualified and successful in the US but you are looking for ' Paradise on Earth'?

That is not Malta! It is a fairly safe environment though but Malta has it's own problems. They have to do with a limited island economy that is based on cheap labour,e-gaming and off-shore finances.

Your graphic design qualification is only really worth anything here if you are centered and experienced in web design and in particular very good with the different programming languages. If you have these qualifications then you have a very good chance of findering a good job.

Please do not even consider doing any kind of job you listed. The minimum wage in Malta is around 700 € and many of those jobs do not pay more than minimum or even less. That is not even enough for you to survive on let alone a family.

Your saved money will probably last a few months if you do not have to pay the plane ticket from your savings.

So my advice would be if you want to give it a go:

Send your CV in advance to as many job agencies as possible(you will find them mentioned in posts in the job section)
Make the trip to Malta a few weeks later as you will need to be in Malta for job interviews.
You can either opt for a shared room (always being offered here on the forum under ' Classifieds' or look for a small appartment ( around 300 €) a bit away from the seafront)
You do not need a work permit and can apply for an ID card right away and have it within a week.
The language you should look at is Italian. When jobs are based on language skills the requirements are usually for native speakers (or a similar level of proficiency), 'being fluent' might not be enough, depends what you mean by that.

Before I write too much just go and read through the posts from the last 12 months. You will find a lot of info and opinions.

I wish you luck and success with your plans.

Cheers
Ricky

Thank you Ricky. Yes, I've read some of the posts before posting my questions, but unfortunately most were too old (things change too fast) and some other questions were answered a little too vague. I thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I'm kind of getting a feeling of how things work by reading other posts and websites.

I'm still trying to figure out when or which month of the year would be better to make the move.
Thanks!
