Hello to everyone from sunny and hot Texas! I was so happy to find this site by chance while doing online research about our possible move to Malta. I have spent the last couple of weeks reading pretty much every post, and l would like to thank all the expats that have contributed such great and useful information... Ricky, GeorgeinGozo, Toonarmy, Rooikat, and so many others, even the ones that have already come and gone. I feel like l know Malta as well as one can know Malta without actually being there.. Based on the information gleamed from this site, l have narrowed our search to Sliema, St. Julian and Gzira, (even though Toonarmy makes his neck of the wood sound so good).. as we would like to be centrally located and do not wish to drive. I am sure the driving there is just as bad as everyone  says it is, but l am sure l've seen worse.
We will be coming out end of August for 2 weeks to check it out and make our final decision then. We plan on going to the weekly meet up whilst there. I am originally from Africa, but grew up in the U.S and am a citizen. My husband is Italian. He is a professional photographer, and we hope to concentrate on wedding photography.
My question for now is, do you think it will be easy to find a holiday let for our 2 week stay once we're on the ground? It seems every place that's reasonably priced is already booked up. We were thinking of staying in a hotel for 1 or 2 nights, then looking for a place. Is this wise?

"My question for now is, do you think it will be easy to find a holiday let for our 2 week stay once we're on the ground?" - you've picked the busiest (and hottest) time of year, but tourism is poor this year, so you should be OK. However, if you could leave it a month or two, it will be much easier to look around the islands

Hi KemKem,

welcome to the forum.

Check out the forum for postings about our weekly meeting as by then we will be on the beach -))))

As George says it is the main tourist season in August but you might have luck towards the end of the month. It is hard to say what is better but for a short stay holiday let for 2 weeks it could be better to book in advance.

Cheers
Ricky

we came here 4 years ago - end of september and booked a hotel for 6days and found a nice apartment in three days. so it is possible.

Try 'Trip Advisor' links for Malta on the internet - we have always managed to find reasonably priced and acceptable standards of accommodation. Their members' reviews are pretty much spot-on.

Thanks for the list. I am looking forward to this trip very much. I have been checking Trip Advisor. I am kind of sure we will find something eventually as we will be there the last week of August. If not, then we will just suck it up and pay an outrageous amount.. If the heat is anything like Texas in the summer, then we'll be right at home . We are pretty sure we 'll love it there, and hopefully will be a good move as it will be closer to his mum in Rome and my family too. I wish we had the guts to do the one way ticket..but..

Hi, try lowcostrooms, travel republic or alpha rooms they are reasonably priced

Thanks. I will check it out too. We found what seems to be a nice one Gzira/Sliema area that doesn't require moving out after like 5 days etc on Trip Advisor, so we are jumping on that one.
Thanks again..

good luck
