Airport Trolley Mafias- Caution to all leaving for the Summer

Hello Expats, once more we have another cautionary tale courtesy of the Arab Times (link) regarding something all expats are familiar with; travel.

Here, we refer specifically to travelling outside the country, as in going away for a vacation etc.

The story goes to refer to the cleaning crew that jump you once your baggage is passed through the x-ray machines, and you make your way towards the departure counter to get check-in your luggage.

Many a times I personally had heated arguments with the cleaners as they insist on grabbing your luggage, throwing it upon trolley's that are offered for FREE should you choose to avail them, and one of them goes up to u and gives u a small stub and asks for 500fils.

Some might say, what is 500fils? these people toil and slave and earn next to nothing.

One might agree, however, they are not asking for gratuity, they are forcing a service upon you, which you could avail yourself. Also, look at the big picture. How many passengers do they fleece of 500fils, per day? The amount will be staggering.

One time I had paid a person for the trolley and his services, and he simply walked away after loading the bags onto the trolley.

The story goes to further show that not only are they rude, but they are deceitful, as one passenger had his bag stolen by one of them.

Hence, also exercise caution when leaving Kuwait. Luckily all luggage now has its own wheels making trolley's almost reduntant, however, better safe than sorry.

Know your rights.

Thanks Legacy, I do travel a lot (pretty much every month) & I always find them forcing me to let them take my bags with the trolley. 1st time I wasn't aware of the charge as I just paid 500 fils outside and they said what I paid outside was my choice but after the bag goes through the X-ray I've to pay them! I kept this in mind and next time I was travelling I refused to let them take my bags, by the time I reached my bag it was already on the trolley. I told the guy not to bother as I will not pay him 500fils (it is not matter of fils it is more of their almost bullying service), he cooly picked up my bag and kept it on the floor!!!!! I've not used their service from that day onwards and if they force I give them a very angry look and they back off!

:one Jasmine, that's the attitude we're talking about! its not a matter of money, or giving to the poor. its a matter of COERCION and bullying.

More expats need to take a stance against this unhealthy phenomena.

When coming into the airport, I do not think I will be able to handle all my bags alone (without a trolley).  Can you please make a suggestion as to where we should go to get the trolley to avoid these porters?  Or can you suggest how to select a legitimate porter?  (Keep in mind, I have no layout of the airport.)

hehe, sorry lme, heres the quick birds-eye-view of the airport.

once u exit your flight, follow the people, you will find em going right mostly, once u get to the area where the duty free shops are surrounding you (left and right) you'll find an escalator, descend. you'll find counters where people are standing. to your right you should find a booth that says visa's. head over there.

once u get ur visa stamped, walk to the luggage carousel. you'll find a long line of trolleys free for the taking, as well as porters who will help u for 500 fils.

lol, that felt like a walkthrough for a game :P

now, the thing about the trolleys we are referring to here is that it is at a junction where trolleys are not available. i.e., you pull up at the airport, say goodbye to your loved ones, pack your luggage onto a trolley and head for the entrance. u stand in line, and pass through an x-ray. after the x-ray you get to the check-in counters. unfortunately you cannot take your trolley in with u. so there are trolleys inside, but in the rush to get to the check-in counter first, some people forgo actually having to look for them. or the porters could have cleverly hidden them. u are within ur right to take one from them and refuse to have them accompany u, as it is not their "property", nor is it a scarce resource, they must have ways of getting more. they play on the part that people want to get to the check in counters quickly.

does this make sense? :P

Oh, so you don't check your luggage before going through security (x-ray) there? Now all that makes sense. I was thinking, like lme, that they were waiting for you at baggage claim.
