Hey y'all! I've been trying to prepare and gather the essentials I will need once I'm in Kuwait. I have a couple of questions that I'm sure most you who've been there a while can answer.

The first one is about power outlets. I plan to bring a couple of adaptors with me for charging my laptop, iPad, etc. what voltage will I need? I found this nifty Apple kit for the iPad and iPhone. Do you think it would work in Kuwait? - store.apple.com/us/product/MB974ZM/B

Secondly, how cold does it get in Kuwait? How long is winter? I'm just trying to figure out how much winter clothing and which shoes I should bring with me.

Have experienced 2 Kuwaiti winters.  In 2010, I brought 1 GAP sweatshirt and never had to wear it-- way too warm~!

In 2011, freakishly cold-- I had my down winter jacket on, wool turtlenecks with down puffer vest..... you get the idea and I'm Canadian:-)

It seriously got down to a couple of degrees celsius at night and the mornings were bitter cold and windy.

How long does the winter last? Will I be ok with a coat, a couple sweaters, and some boots? I'm from southern US, so I'm quite familiar with unpredictable winters. In January 2011, I was iced in my apartment complex for a week. This past winter, I never even pulled my coat out of the closet, as light sweaters were all I needed.

Hi Crystal

heres what iv learnt while living in Qatar. The winters will be cold but they will be a relieve from the heat. i get away with some thin cardigans (or sweaters) you wont need a thick coat. some people do buy small heaters which can also be an additional ac unit in the summer.

as for the adaptors as long as they are three prongs (british style) it should be fine. Voltage im not sure but if its anything like Qatar it all short circuits regardless so make sure they are shock absorbant.

I am gona get most of my stuff there when i land. only bringing the stuff i know i wont get in Kuwait

it gets down to about 1*C in the city, Winters will be cold, just pack a few warm anoraks and ur good to go.

as for voltage, like Ally said, a few converters and ur good to go.

"Winter" lasted approximately 3 months last year from December - to February-- ok, my memory is fuzzy on that one so someone please correct me as to when the cold weather began.

-- no need for winter boots-- I brought my fall leather boots though and that was fine. Seen some people wearing UGGS :-)

From my experience, it's much cheaper to buy the adapters here than in the states.  So I wouldn't go overboard bringing a lot from the states.  Just a couple to get you by until you can go shopping.  Most are 2-3 times more expensive in the U.S.

And things like hair dryers, curling irons (not that I use them) you should just leave at home if they are 120 Volt and buy when you get here, since even with power converters (as opposed to adapters) they will burn up and probably catch on fire.

Most small electronics like phones and laptops are now are multi-voltage and all you need will be an adapter.  Just look on the device or the power cord and if it says Input: 100-240V you will be ok.

Thanks! I knew I could count on y'all for valuable information!

Shisha- Your fall boots are probably like my winter boots, since you're Canadian. Although I was thinking about bringing a pair of Uggs. I don't wear them often here, and I will probably wear them even less there!

Nomad- guess I won't be using your curling iron!! :P I was just gonna get a converter or two to charge my iPod and laptop, as those contain my music, movies, and books, along with connection to my people!

Could someone throw some light on the sandstorms like when do they occur & how long do they last, what precautions to be taken etc

So, I have a dual voltage hair dryer and flat iron. Now, I just need to get my dang NOC! I'm at a stand-still until that arrives, and I'm beginning to worry about lack of time.  Between the American and Kuwait governments, this could be a lengthy process! :/

I been in Kuwait for quite long time I love some places here like malls, restaurant and beaches to enjoy and gather with friends and family every weekends.

Another weather question for y'all...how humid does it get there? I know it gets insanely hot. According to the literature I received it also gets humid. Just how humid? I'm trying to imagine it based on my experience.

Here the highs in the summer range from upper 90's (F) to lower 100's (F) with 75-95% humidity. It isn't the heat but the humidity that is stifling here...breathing outside can be difficult at times.

Nomad12

Humidity is nothing like it is in the southern U.S., speaking from someone who spent most of my years in the south, including FL, GA, TX.  Humidity in UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) is much worse than here during the summer.

crittle73

Yeah, I'm in Savannah for the summer. It is MISERABLE here! This weekend we have forecasted highs of 97-99 with 70-80% humidity. Atlanta isn't quite as bad. I've had to change up my wardrobe just to accommodate for the humidity. Clothes just stick to you here!

Crittle, I have been trying to imagine what the heat is going to feel like also.  At first I was going to live within walking distance of where I would work, and all I could think was I can't stand walking from my house to my car on a hot humid day, how would I walk a couple blocks in 120 degree weather?  Luckily, I will now be living quite a distance away and they will provide transportation.
