How did the Americans living in Libya get past the authentication of the passport translation? I am trying to get a visa however the Libyan autorities are asking for the translation of my passport information to be certified by the American Consulate -and the Consulate says they do not provided translators and will not authenticate any translation. Looks like Catch 22.Please adivise -how did you do it?

Consulates don't provide translators. But they can give you a list of sworn translator. So ask them where you can find a translator.

I got mine completed by the local Arab Chamber of Commerce (in London). However, when I went to get the visa they (in Canada now) pointed out the translator didnt sign the translation they only stamped it. So a $60  cash shakedown fee later got me the signiture. Make sure they sign it, a stamp isnt good enough.

There's an extensive thread on the Lonely Planet forums about getting translations in the US.  I'd post the link, but it would get moderated in oblivion.

I got the translation done in London by a facilitation company - and they didn't stamp or sign it - much to my displeasure when trying to board the KLM flight in Amsterdam the first time I travelled, when some KLM jobsworth refused me boarding because the translation hadn't been stamped.

This stamping/signing is a load of crap, the Libyan immigration require a translation, that's all. It's the carriers who have nade up the myth about stamping/signing the translation. Only reason to get it done is for peace of mind at check-in.

The short story in North America is that almost any Arab Chamber of Commerce can do it.  VIP services uses one of the chambers of commerce (can't remember which).  Prices vary between $50-$100.
