hi phil/mark,

a cheap car in BG costs from 400 euros to ..... lets say 1500 euros for a used car. "Good" is a tricky question, I guess so is "cheap".
Costs:
- check the car in an auto repair workshop before you buy it - 30 - 200 lv. you can skip this one, but I strongly recommend that you do it before you sign or pay anything for the car.
- transferring the car form the old owner to the new owner - notary tax, here's the basis for the calculation in lv.

up to 100 лв.  includingly           30
101 to 1 000 lv.                    30 + 1,5 % for the amount exceeding 100 lv.

- you have a 14 day term to register your car at the "KAT" - Automobile Control Service and 2 months term to register it in the municipality where you live.

- for KAT you'll need to show "Grajdanska Otgovornost" - Civil Responsibility Insurance Policy, which is about 150 lv. and paid EcoTax (depends on the car), also the car should be equipped with  - FirstAid Pack, fire extinguisher, reflective triangle, and reflective vest;
- next step i to fill the KAT declaration and submit it,administrative tax - 12 lv.
- final step - car documentation and registration numbers - 68 lv.

that's it. what is left is a municipalyty tax /differs/ and a vignette /depends on the term/ but you will need it only if you travel outside the city you live in.
