I definetly can recommend this for an afternoon out if you are looking for something to do.  We took a trip down there this weekend and were pleasantly surprised.

Some of the enclosures are closed down as of right now but there are still quite a few animals to see.  There were some big cats such as panthers, cougars and a tiger.  Also some camels, wildabeest, cows, grizzly bears, emus and different sorts of deer.  Some nice birds such as flamingos, peacocks, vultures, falcons.  We took a wrong turn and ended up in an area closed to the public and caught a glimpse of at least 3 baby lions waiting to go out on display once they get bigger.  Things were relatively clean, (saw a couple of animals eating garbage but not as bad as I would have suspected).  There is also a nice big playground and grassy area around the zoo grounds for picnics.  They do have food/drink stalls as well as stalls to buy children's toys.  Overall much better than I would have thought and quite quiet given its location in the middle of the city.

we were there too with the baby. she liked it a lot and we liked that it was not overcrowded (on Saturday)and quite clean. a good place for kids to run about and good place for grown-ups to feel less alert as there are no cars there. (we have come across a car in the park close to the Dahra Souq!)
