What is a B Card?
I am from India and studied in London.
My employers is interested in offering me a B Card.

2)how long it might take?
3) Also do i need to take a visa once i get the work permit?

Please let me know as its important as well as urgent.
Thank you

!God bless!

Work permit type B, issued to a single employer for 12 months. You'll also need a visa which you get from the nearest Belgian consular office who can also advise on your work permit.

@schoolmum: could you tell me how many working days it might take to get a b card?

schoolmum

Sorry I don't work for the Belgian government and in any case all work permits are individual and time limits are determined by the individual's personal circumstances. You must ask the relevant Belgian authorities what the likely time spans are but they will only be a general indication.

houami

thank you. its been one week now and Im feeling little worried about it

schoolmum

one week is absolutely nothing, I'd count on 6 months perhaps?

houami

oh! the employer wants me to come there asap. they said that it might take 2 weeks. anything soon possible?

schoolmum

It's not up to your employer. You need a work permit. Then you need a visa. I couldn't see even the most efficient country in the world issuing both of these in 2 weeks, perhaps in 4. But I would give it at least 2 months and maximum 6 months.

It is possible to get it in as little as two or three weeks. All depends on the experience of the employer, sophisticated companies are very good at getting things done. Once the work permit is issued, the visa goes quite fast. I would suggest to contact the consulate and start preparing the paperwork for the visa, they will tell what you will need once the work permit is ready (health certificate?, birth certificate? ... no idea, but better to find out in advance).

Masses of information on visas for Indians living in India. Just takes a little google searching :-)

You need a NATIONAL visa, not a Schengen one, when enquiring by phone or email, just make sure you mention this.

Good point. Indeed, there are several visas. Ask for the papers you will need to submit for a long term visa based on a B work permit.

Having read the excellent advice above, just thought of 2 things which might be useful :

1) you'll need plenty of passport photos immediately on arrival for commune (town hall registration), STIB transport pass if you're moving to Brussels, our bank took a photo even. They aren't that expensive here, about €5 for 4 photos, but to save you locating the photo machines here, bring some with you!

2) scan all important documents, including passport, especially anything you submit for work permit and visa. Documents can get lost in officialdom, if you have everything stored as JPEG or PDF, well you can access them again quickly.
