Moving to Malta

Post new topic

irishgirl84

Hi All
I am very interested in moving to Malta and am just looking for some more info if anyone here can help me.
I am 28 and a single mother to a 8 year old.  I have been working for a multinational company here in Ireland for the past 5 years and there is a job in Malta for me if I decide I want to go.
My questions are;
1)Rent seems quite cheap there, are there any hidden costs to go on top of it...council charges/bin charges/water meters?
2)Do I need a car there or is public transport good?
3)Are the schools good over there, are they fee paying?
4)Are there after school facilities/child minders for when I am working?
5)Is it expensive to live there - ie food, electricity
6)Are there any tax breaks for single parents? I would not be claiming a lone parent benefit or anything but here I get double tax credits.

Any help anyone could offer would be appreciated.  I am so sick of Ireland - working full time the last 9 years and no better off than when I started out.

Thank u all in advance

hi Irish Agirl
slighhtly different circumstances but may help. i have been comuting monthly between UK and Malta for over a year as my partner is resident and working in Malta  during this time we have been researching to decide where to relocate  after checking plus and minus malta won  , salary is lower but what matters most and quality of life. and on this Malta was the way out intrest.
cost of living
renting Flat was dramatically cheaper than Uk no hidden extras
motoring more expensive but as a small item works out reasonable
food , comparing quality to cost Malta wins
overall no regrets relocating as quality of life far superior for us compared to uk

Hi
Thanks so much for your reply.  Ireland is so much more expensive than the UK so if its cheaper than there, that's great.I am seriously considering it as things are going from bad to worse here.  Plus I think my child is at the age where she can adapt quite easily.  Would you mind me asking where in Malta you have relocated to??  Our office is based in Ta'xbiex

have relocated to Naxxar was previouly living in Edinburgh in Scotland , have a 3 bedroom flat fully furnished , ensuite and 2 balconies €475 pm plus electric and water , here in uk would be double  what is most important though is quality  of life which is far superior in Malta

Hi irishgirl,

welcome to the forum.

I'm sorry to hear that 'things' are going from bad to worse in Ireland. You don't see that much information in the news about the way things really are there.

From my own experience as a kid moving to Germany I can say that children adapt fast and also learn the local language quite easily. It is also usually no problem being accepted by the new classmates and local kids. You will find a lot of opinions about public state schools and private schools. It is a difficult decision.

Ta'xbiex is a very nice locality and you can easily reach Sliema/ST.Julians in one direction and Valletta in the other. They also have a very nice rocky beach and swimming zone with great views of the bastions and Manoel Island. So you could look around Ta'xbiex itself or the Sliema area or even BIrkirkara if you want it a bit cheaper.

CHeck out previous post and sections like 'cost of living','schooling'  and so on. You will find most of your questions answered.

One thing to get used to compared to Ireland is the .....sun -))) And less green than Ireland.

Cheers
