Can an American (who is not of Indian origin) live in India?

I am trying to find a way to get a visa so I can live in India without having to leave every six months. If you know of a way I would love to hear it. My family and I have been to India and we fell in love with the food, culture, and people. We want to live there, but hate the fact that we would have to leave so often. If we could be there for a year before having to leave that would be fine.

If you have any ideas of know of a way please help.

Hey,
I suggest you take an offer from an Indian company and get a work visa so that u dont have to return oftenly.

Secondly,
i would like to know your profession and region you would like to live in India .

Initially there is some problem in adjusting to the climate, but later on you will enjoy life out here.

Coming to your question, as my wife is Canadian citizen, i know a bit about the rules. Basically you have to get your name registered in nearest Foreigners Registration Office. This registration is valid for six months. Before it expires, just go there and renew it again for next six months. Simple.. No need to leave the country.
Getting a job offer would make it even simpler..
