That's no wonder when you see the careless (brainless?) handling in daily life and non-conformance with laws and guidelines in Malta: Many persons and esp. children are not belted inside the cars, lots of construction workers do not wear proper safety equipment, most of vehicles (on land and sea) drive too fast and reckless, illegal hunting is a risk for all hikers ... and also fireworks production even on Sundays and beyond all safety precautions is a risk for the workers.

But it seems to me that living with the danger (even it could be easily avoided) is part of the current lifestyle here ... ;)

Like it happened in other countries, also the Maltese people need to find out themselves - and they will sooner or later, even if it's on the hard way - that being careful and obeying safety precautions is not only waste of money and time ...

That's not primarily a question of politics, or creating new laws, or more activities by police ... it's simply a question of how to convince the people. And this takes a lot of time.

You would think that the death toll alone over the last few years would be enough to convince them to enforce proper health and safety laws where fireworks are concerned.

There was a report last year looking at the safety of fireworks factories in the UK. If safety was comparable to the UK, Malta would expect a serious accident once every 250 years.

Health and Safety matters here are of major concern to many people - when will those responsible learn and enforce the regs.

Since I was directly involved in health and safety issues the last years on construction sites all over the world I was quite shocked seeing the standards here . EU member state !
Especially the coloured workers are not even provided with a dust mask while working on building constructions ... not to mention helmets, safety glasses or steel cap shoes - but all this is clearly stated on the safety signs which have to be mounted mandatory at each construction site ...
