Crime in Cuenca

Post new topic

Char57

In reading info from the government site I am worried about crime against expats in the area. "Crime is a significant concern." it goes on to warn about high crime at ATM's, the airport, taxi robbery, home invasion, rape, a lot of debit and credit card stealing and occ. murder.

We are a quiet couple who seek a community, slower pace, nature, neighbors who will become friends. Do those living there now feel there is a overly high incidence of crime against expats? Do the people of Cuenca welcome expats from the US or is it not such a friendly area?

Thank you

Don't believe everything you read, especially from the government. Whoever wrote that warning obviously doesn't live here. Maybe they copied and pasted Detroit's by mistake ;). There is of course more crime in the larger cities (Quito and especially Guayaquil), but overall Ecuador is a beautiful country with warm, welcoming people.

Come see for yourself.

Thanks.. the info came from the US Embassy site..

could i ask, did you have any problems with altitude when you moved there?

eddstaton

None at all, but some folks do struggle with the change in altitude. Plus Cuenca isn't exactly flat!

thanks again. we will be coming from a altitude of 600 ft :) so i expect it will take a while to adjust.
