I think Safron is freaking expensive. If I'm not mistaken it was ranked as the worlds most expensive spice. With only the top rest. using it at all... I'm not sure if it's the same safron you're wondering about though.

You will not find saffron in grocery stores.It is far far too expensive for Thai people to use.

You could use tumeric which is often called "poor mans saffron".
