What do you think of Bulgarian town Varna?

Burgas has a much nicer feel to the place less commercial nicer Bulgarian people

I digress from the two posters above. I adore Varna. It has everything one needs to live a happy and peaceful life. The only complaint I have is the ridiculous cost of electric and the lack of natural gas in the region. Also, the further up the hill toward Sunny Beach you go, the more lime is to be found in the water.

I can live with those little inconveniences.

Im glad you feel different to me and your happy there. Perhaps my negative feelings about Varna was caused a little through my own fault. When i went there i was not in the best mental state some years ago.
I think despite many Bulgarians are good decent honest people. There are also many who can spot someone feeling down a mile off.
They will take advantage if they can.
I would never reccomend Bulgaria to anyone to live or invest in unless they have their whits about them 100%

Ironically, most older Bulgarians, (including my husband), whom I met are chronically depressed; so yes, I agree, if you are not feeling "up to par", Bulgaria in general is not good for you.

I taught English lit and grammar to high school students and maintained friendships with Bulgarians under 35ish - they are upbeat, respectful and intelligent for the most part and good for one's psych.

I think Bulgarians are a unhealthy race. This is not me just being horrible again. I think its the truth. Too many of the smoke way too much. They do not like to excercise.
But you know i think the biggest problem more than smoking is the quality of the food. They are not too wealthy on average and so too easily depend on cheap processed meats.
I think physical health has a big impact on a persons mental health. Peopel in the countryside who grow their own are obviously a lot healthier.

Actualy i have been reading about it and Bulgaria has the highest rate of depopulation. This can not just be explained by people going abroad to live to earn better money.

That is an interesting thought. Mea culpa, on the smoking and coming to think of it, the base "exercise" for Bulgarians is walking. Not to split hairs or be disrespectful, but the men are more "laid-back" and the workforce, other than construction and day-labor, is populated mostly by women.

I also agree on the quality of food consumed by the average Bulgarian. Good food is available, but somewhat out of reach when one is living on 100 lev a week or are pensioners living on even less. The national menu is somewhat limited and the greasy sausages and cheap processed meats you write of are staples.

The chicken and eggs are fantastic, compared to the hormone injected, plumped-up crap we get stateside. I eat well in Bulgaria, relying mostly on salads, fish and chicken. The beef cuts are terrible, but pork, when trimmed properly, is excellent.

Bulgaria has one of the highest rates of depression in the world and one of the lowest divorce rates (4% +/-) - wonder if there is a link betwixt the two?! Lithuania is #1 for depression, so stay away from there as well!

Villages are healthier no matter where you live in the world.

Varna is called Bulgaria's Marine Capital (being located on the coast of the Black Sea). With a population of almost 400 thousand, this nickname is well-deserved, especially since Varna is the kind of city that has something for everyone: It is a business hot spot, a tourist resort and a truly historic place. In fact, Varna is one of Europe's oldest cities.

It would be good for some people to cut watching horror films. Instead of carrying negative energy from USA, you better enjoy the sun, nature and good people!

You mixed Bulgaria with Romania

While Romania might be more famous for vampires, "vampire graves" have been found in both Romania and Bulgaria and there has been talk in recent years of opening a "vampire tour" that explores both southern Romania and parts of northern Bulgaria, visiting different graves and exploring the history and legends. (Not sure if the tour company has succeeded in opening the tour yet).

Re vampires and evil deeds.. Why do people revel in the macabre.

Why not trips based on nice / positive aspects of Bulgaria such as the relics of John the Baptist in Sozopol. This has to be rated as a ‘No 1 Must See’

Last week I visited The Petrified Forest outside Varna and was the only person there.
I don’t think Bulgaria does enough to promote what it does have..

I think that is a great thing about Bulgaria- something to interest everyone. A bit of the macabre for those interested in it and a bit of the spiritual for those interested in that. Its history is amazingly full... which allows almost everyone to find something to connect with.

We are thinking about stopping by the petrified forest today It is one of my favorite spots. I do agree there is a lot of Bulgaria that goes unnoticed/unadvertised.
