So I have read about health care and private versus the public health care..... my question is about dental.  Is dental care regularly available or is this something you would have to travel for?

Dental care is readily available, at least in the cities, and at least by reputation is more highly regarded than medical care in Belize, overall.

Thanks very much for the info - we are still working out a schedule when we are in country - will be getting to the Cayes as well as exploring the inland areas.  Trying to get a feel for the countryside and what we like and dislike about different areas.

Currently going through an extensive course of dental treatment ( implants, root canals, crowns) and am particulary impressed with the dentist I chose ( Doctor Pedro Habet, Mercy Lane, Belize City).
As far as I am concerned I have received better and more expert treatment than when I lived in the UK.

I know a few people that will get dental work here while on vacation because they have found a dentist they like and the price is better than they would pay back home. Dr Cima on Ambergris Caye comes highly recommended by a few of my friends for a dentist on Ambergris Caye.

I needed one that carries out implant work though and not all dentists are qualified to do this.

We had our teeth cleaned and exam in Corozal last week. $40USD. This dentist "does it all", she's a dental surgeon and her business card specifies: extractions, prophylaxis, restorative treatment, prosthetic dentistry, dental x-rays, endodontics. Dr. Glenda Major, South End Dental Clinic, 157 Almond Drive, Corozal. 501-402-2050. Hours: Mon-Fri 5pm-pm, Saturday 9am-12noon.

Great information guys.  Thanks so very much.  This is really helping our research on a move to Belize!

I just had my first visit with Dr. Mark Johnson and his hygienist wife Joan here on Ambergris Caye (http://minnesotadentistry.net/). They were great!  Super nice folks, very up-to-date and professional office.  I paid $222 BZ ($111 US) for a full panoramic x-ray, bitewings, new patient visit and $92 BZ ($46 US) for very thorough cleaning.  They charge double that in the US.

Highly recommend them!

Routine dental work is readily available in Belize City.  The former Ms. Belize has a dental practice in Placencia.  I am not so sure about implants.  However, Cancun, which is not that far, is a dental mecca attracting people world-wide for their high quality work and low prices; even including the cost of hotel and meals. We always went to Belize Medical Associates for care for our family (if it exceeded what the local doctor could do). We were very pleased with the professional care and the low prices.

I did research Cancun but because of the number of implants (seven) and the number of visits I would need to make to a dentist it would have proven to be more costly ( time and money) to go to Cancun in the long run.

Always hear great reviews on  Dr. Mark Johnson and his hygienist wife Joan, CaribGal.

Anyone been to Dr Julio Lara on Ambergris Caye?

tacogirl

Yesterday I went to my new Dentist, Dr Julio Lara at Ambergris Hope Clinic and got a chipped tooth filled, he did a good job and the cost was only $80 BZD.

I went back this morning to get my teeth cleaned and the price was $150 BZD. While there I asked him about cost of a few other things tat go along with my 2013 self improvement list.  I have a crooked front tooth that I wanted to get fixed, he said for braces on the top few front teeth cost will be $1500 BZD and Whitening is $500.

Dear Cruisin:  I suppose that may be somewhat dependent on where you land.  Here in Corozal we have an excellent dentist and his fees are very modest.

Last year I cracked the root on a back tooth and there was just no saving it. Well immediately I was hooked up with an Oral Surgeon here in Georgia, that soon started on my implant to replace the missing tooth....Total cost for the titanium implant and the crown that sets on top....$7,000.00.  I have bought cars cheaper than that one tooth...lol
