Food allergies in Kuwait

Post new topic

kimber_rere

Does anyone have experience managing food allergies in Kuwait?

Are restaurants used to dealing with this and issues of cross-contamination?
Are menus in English?
Are there places to buy gluten-free products?
Do restaurants have gluten-free options?
Are peanuts and tree nuts commonly found in menu items?
Are peanuts a popular snack item?

Thanks!

Oh, and what are the grocery stores like?

Well, nuts are popular alright, depending on the cuisine of course. :) The more expensive restaurants probably cater for the people with gluten intolerance, but don't expect it to be common practice.
Grocery stores are like everywhere else, minus the alcohol and pork.

As far as I know, the Ministry of Health here is strict when it comes to food inspection. There are tons of groceries and lots of options to choose from. The bigger ones are Carrefour, City Center and Sultan. You can search for them online to check out information.

Yes since this is a Muslim country, pork and alcohol is banned unless you can buy them inside the US camp or something.

there are many international brands of almost all cuisine and i hope you wont be having any food allergies.most of them do have the menus in English, also English is understood by most of the people.

Thanks for the info!  It is helpful to know what the grocery stores are called.  Does the Ministry of Health have information available online on their food inspection criteria?  I'm not concerned with alcohol, as I'm allergic, so that is actually not a problem at all for me!  Pork isn't an issue either, as I don't eat it.

My main concern is being able to go out and have fun with friends but stay safe at the same time!

Do you know if the people who prepare the food tend to speak English?

hello Kimber, a delayed answer:

Are restaurants used to dealing with this and issues of cross-contamination?
not to my knowledge

Are menus in English?
yes but depending on the restaurant (gourmet or run-of-the-mill) their English might be broken, and comic

Are there places to buy gluten-free products?
i would guess Sultan Center, but then again it would come with a price tag

Do restaurants have gluten-free options?
not to my knowledge

Are peanuts and tree nuts commonly found in menu items?
nope, not common

Are peanuts a popular snack item?
as in peanut trays at bars? nope, people in this locale tend to snack on sunflower seeds

as for the cooks speaking english, again it would depend on where you eat, and even then their english would be basic - i.e. they wouldn't probably comprehend the term gluten free.
