Oil paintings in Budapest

Dear Expats,

There seem to be a lack of good oil paintings for sale in Budapest, any ideas why? What are your experiences? Any art buyers out there?

Sorry, but I for one am not clear on your question.

Are you saying there are not many "good" paintings, even if there are many "not so good" ones available. That is, among the thousands available, you can only find a few you consider "good".

Or are you saying there are simply fewer paintings available overall?

If you mean the former, I would maybe venture that may be in part a matter of taste.

If you mean the later, I assume it is simple economics: no market. Many people spend what little money they have on life supporting activities (rent, food, heating, etc.), not on original art. Or in other words, if you want to be a starving artist, Hungary is the place to be (to starve that is). ;)

P.S. I prefer water colors myself.

The place I found regionally that has quite good for low priced art is Kiev, Ukraine.

Well, that question is quite open to interpretation :-)

I guess Munkacsy and Csontvary are pretty good, but then all the hobby artists I know in the village make better paintings than I could ever hope to.

Szentendre might be worth a visit on a sunny day, definitely closer than Kiev :-)

Thank you members for indulging my open question... I'm grateful for the suggestions of those places to visit. As it happens I was speaking with someone only a few days ago who managed to fly to Kiev for under two Euros.

Clearly a matter of taste! of course; but since few paintings have grabbed my attention, Budapest, then, is in need of more starving artists (so long as they produce something with an edge). There are far fewer paintings here that appeal to my taste, and no doubt I am not alone.

That said, I do have a good example by a Hungarian artist that I'm willing to part with (not wishing to starve myself – thank you for the tip klsallee!), and so I have listed it in the classified section for anyone who is interested in this kind of thing to appraise.

I applaud you,

FYI, you are not limited to your local Hungarian or Ukranian artists you know. There is a world of internet out there and it contains online auctions of art and antiques.
