I have oven which has no markings on it, its a gas oven, the only thing i can estimate about the temprature is the flame inside the oven, which i dont c properly too as its covered...i have googled about it, found some solutions, but one concern is that the gas knob works anticlock wise, means it shuts off at ninety degree angle and the highest flame is when i turn it all the way down anticlock wise, i have got my hands on an oven thermometer though...any experience with using that?im not sure, should i use the oven thermometer and put it inside the oven and see at different tempratures and mark the knobs by myself accordingly...but the concern is that the flame isnt much visible ,,unless i really peek into that which seems too dangerous..

Enjoy!!!

If you manage to get your oven working to a temperature please let me know!!

I went out and bought a small oven to bake in.

you can move the shelf that cover the flame and now you can see the flame now trying to move the bottom and see the best position for temperature  and then cover it again :)

Thanks for the reply, but its fixed, the metallic plate that covers the flame and serves as the bottom tray of oven, is fixed may b using a screwdriver would help, but still, with an open flame i cant do that

I think - as with alot of the cookers here in Egypt - the markings are for decoration oly anyway.
It is a case of trial and error and learning the position of the dial when you are successful in what you do.

What I have also found is that lacing a wad of damp newspaper underneath the cake tin / biscuit tray during the cooking also helps - it stops the bottom becoming burnt and black.

The worst disaster I had was trying to make a pavlova.  Was a very intersting nearly burnt colour 1/2 way through the cooking time (not been brave enough to do it again.

But buy a good small oven (not the cheapest or you will have the same experience) is the solution - we bake every week now - my children and I.
Las weeks delicacy was a delicious Lemon Drizzle Cake -(A Mary Berry recipe to be precise) - delicious!!!!!

I too had same problem. brought oven thermometer (64 egyptian pounds) from hyperone supermarket. problem with my gas oven is I have to closely watch temp till the baking completes. its fluctuating so you have to adjust knob many times to retain correct temp.

I dont want to spend money on another oven as I dont know how long I will stay here.
