The lingerie market in Kuwait

Post new topic

ed2702

Hello everyone, I'm a French student and I'm doing a project about the lingerie market for my university. I hardly find information about that on the internet so I'd like you to tell me what you know about this subject:
-the customers habits
-how the products are sold: clothes shops? department stores?
-how do they organize the store?
-how the brands manage to communicate depiste the bans
-is the lingerie the same as we have in western countries?
thanks for your help! :)

bans? same as in the west?

Hi. I am French too and living in Kuwait for 1 year now. I am not a specialist in "lingerie market'(!)but everything in Kuwait regarding that issue appears to me to be very similar to what we have in France or in other European countries. All the stores are the same especially in malls. All the brands are present and do not have any difficulty to communicate! All the best.

thank you for sharing what you know guys. However I'd like to point out some things.
Bans do exist:
-since 2007, men can't work in lingerie stores
-since 2012, you can't display lingerie in shop windows
What I also want know is how underwears are socialy perceived and if the brands adapt the products. Useful photographs are welcome! :)

If this is true then I must have ended up in the wrong Kuwait!?

ed2702

Well I don't know, I don't live there. I simply did some research on the internet, the information I got seemed serious to me. However, I guess that stores don't fully apply the law. :)

Ribosom

Well, there are few laws that are truly enforced here, that is my impression anyway.

Their lingerie market is very similar with  that in the West. They even have Victoria Secret and Pink stores. In fact it is quite a big store, so yeah!

Most of lingerie stores are located at the mall.
Cheers

thx for your answers! Are changing rooms allowed in Kuwait? (because I read that they're not in Saudi Arabia)

Hi Ed

The lingerie market in Kuwait is not unlike any other market in the world.  However, social aspects of society affects all retail products, and in the case of lingerie, the influence is very positive.  I dont want to create a stereotype, but imagine the typical conservative local family, where one husband has more than one wife.  In European or Western families, the spend on lingerie would therefore be much less than in families in the Middle East, where multiple wives contribute to increased lingerie sales per family.

Wisker

Changing room - of course it is allowed!

ed2702

@gold digger, thank your for stressing this facet, I'm going to develop that in my project

dear GoldDigger,

you stress that a "typical" conservative family sees the husband with more than one wife, tell me, how many men do u know that have more than one wife in Kuwait, nay, the arab world in general? just because it is allowed does not mean it is enforced, or sought after.

your analogy of cost is amusing. assuming a man having an affair in the west will not buy his mistress lingerie?

it is ignorant comments like that that paint the middle east in bad image, as sex-crazed maniacs that have no respect or their wives and therefore marry 3 other women.

now yes, ed, males in saudi arent allowed to work in lingerie shops. but given the fact that if u walk into a souq here, they have lingerie out in the open. HOWEVER, there is no such facility to try out the underwear prior to purchasing it, not to my knowledge at least as i have never shopped for women's underwear, however all stores stress the issue that underwear items once sold cannot be returned or exchanged. hence, for hygienic purposes, there would be no fitting rooms for underwear.

Maraf

The image that people living outside the Middle East about the Middle East makes me laugh sometimes :)
Everything is normal here , may be Saudi Arabia is a bit stricter other than that , we r normal creatures :)
All the best for ur project :)
