Moving somewhere you've never been???

Post new topic

I enjoy reading posts on this and other "expat" forums. However, I am continually amazed at how many posts/replies I read from individuals who say that they're "moving to [fill in LA country]", but then admit that they've never even been to that country!! Even further, many of them admit that they don't speak Spanish or have any real knowledge of Latin American culture. I just read such a post on another forum (where I'm not registered), but I occasionally read similar comments here.

I hate to be so cynical, but doesn't that seem incredibly naive/foolish? I'm all for being a dreamer, but still. I wonder how many people successfully move to another country that they've never even visited, and it works out in the end? I'd be curious to hear from someone who did move to a country that they'd never even visited, and did it work out?

My ancestors moved to the U.S., didn't speak any English and were virutally penniless. I fully understand what you are saying, but most that move from the U.S. to other countries have a way to support themselves and have the benefit of the internet and other sources to educate themselves on what they will be facing. Another thing they have is the ability to move back if things don't work out. Virtually none of the immigrants to the U.S. can say the same. I think most expats would strongly suggest a trial period in your "dream" destination before making a committment, but there is something to be said for the "adventurous" spirit.
