Does anyone know whether these cards work in Libya?

Thanks for your help.

i am not sure, now there is a bank called AL-Aman which can issue Master cards and it has different branch around Tripoli and also has ATM machines support different type of cards. you should go to their main office at Gurge to ask about that.http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/32626643.jpg

If it has the MasterCard symbol, it will work in an ATM which displays the MarterCard symbol.

In therory at least....

Hi

Thanks!!

Indeed I tried the Corinthia Aman Bank ATM and it accepted the card but not my PIN.. ;-)

You might need to tell your bank where you are.
My bank are pretty hot at identifying "suspicious" account activity, to the point where I call them the day before I travel in order to tell them where/when I will be. Better safe than shafted :)

My Banker's kind of opened minded now on the geographic movements.. :-) On the contrary, it's when I stop withdrawing that they're suspicious. ;-)

On the other hand do check the number of withdrawals on your accounts when using your cards here because the visa connectivity used by the two private banks with Visa/mastercard ATMs  are not really secure according to experts so I know people who had to complain for fake cash withdrawals. As for the other banks ATM's they're so limited they're  impossible to locate for the time being.

it is too complicated! my recommendation to be save and secure without any doubt, use your current ATM  card in your country or on internet as usual, for living here in Libya i prefer that you open a new account in Al aman bank (Al-aman bank have many ATM machines around tripoli and may be you find some out of tripoli)

I think it depends on your bank.  I have been using my Canadian interact and Visa card without any problems at the Al Aman machines...the one in Souk Atalat and on out in Janzour.  Call your credit card company and see if they have put a stop on withdrawls.  My friend found this is what happened with her account and had to call them.  Good luck!

I agree with Bluejay. I have been using my HSBC ATM card on occasion here in Libya and it worked fine for me at Aman Bank ATM's. Surprisingly my HSBC UAE card doesn't work here.

My Chip-based Mastercard from Canada also worked at M&S with the PIN code.
