Hi EB,
Can anyone share their experience of Jeddah beach trips for expats? I hear Silver Sands mentioned often and also private hotel beaches....basically I would like to visit beaches where western dress is okay and food/facilities are decent. What/where do you recommend? What restrictions apply and what are the costs?
Many thanks

don't know about jeddah . but in khobar many private resorts with nice beaches are there at nominal prices.
The question was about Jeddah @desertlifestyle
No one can come to Khobar from Jeddah for better resorts.
For information on Siler Sands beach, read the several websites which have reviews.
As a Westerner, I would appreciate members' comments on whether western bathing apparel for men AND WOMEN is acceptable - my wife and I have never been to Silver Sands - we usually go to Bahrain for weekends for a Westerner's lifestyle.

Yes, Silver Sands is purely western beach
Hello. I have been to silver sands an also to the private beach club from sheraton... Both are nice. 150 SR per person during weekends... For the sheraton you need an invitation, honestly i dont know how to get it but you can ask at the hotel in the city. As a woman you can wear a bikini if you like. As a men any kind is ok i guess. No abayas.
Hola Karla - communidad mexicana en Saudi - no es.
Pero mi casa es en Extremadura, Espana y hablo Espanol - poco!
Beaches in Jeddah - Western only? No creo.
Some members post that it is not purely Western at Silver Sands - and also it is confusing when some say it is now part of a Resort into which (pardon the pun) one cannot gain access at weekends and yet another complains of abuse by local employee.
Suggest that Hash Harriers might have something to input re. Western province beaches acceptable to Anglo Saxon culture (?)
Whilst everyone blogs what they knew to be correct at the time of their last visit, in KSA everything can change without prior notice and what was "yesterday" is not necessarily the same today.
My wife and I just relax at home around our private pool - no worries about swimming apparel acceptability or not, also saves a lot of hazardous driving and searching for entrances to "Western" beaches, only to find one is mixed in with those of a different cultural background who could feel, or express, unease about bathing and sunbathing, Western style.
thehudd!
Thanks for your reply in spanish. y NO no hay mexicanos en Yeda al parecer (apperently there are no mexican people in Jeddah)
Julien,
Yes, I could post in English (my native language)- but why would I discriminate against those for whom English is not their native tongue - there are many genuine expats from continental Europe, and even the US where no one speaks English.
And in case you have forgotten we reside in an Arabic speaking country!
Strange that you have not chided those whose command of YOUR chosen language is really poor. Do you just discriminate against Ulstermen?
To the administrator - could you ask all members to post their profile in English - some list their interests as
"cultures étrangères, internet, musique, plongée" whatever these are!

It's not about discrimination. These are ENGLISH forums @thehudd. If you like, you can post in the spanish forum here: https://www.expat.com/es/forum/

Would not be possible in the real world!
I guess you missed this post: SAUDI ARABIA FORUM CODE OF CONDUCT
Actually, you guess incorrectly.
Perhaps YOU do not understand the wording in the Code of Conduct.
Do you understand the difference between an invitation and an order? "I was just following invitations" was hardly a defence at Nurembourg.
Can you gentlemen please keep such conversation private? I am also wondering about private beaches in Jeddah and I do not want to see this thread lost to a heated off-topic discussion. And if you are invited to follow such guidelines, I believe it is a good public manner to follow them.
Anyway, let's keep this on topic, please. Thank you.

How do you figure it's discriminatory if there are also forums in Spanish, French, etc.? A bit of an over-reaction, I'd say.
Ok, i just want to say, since the spanish message was directed to me, it was a friendly message, from someone who has the kindness or the fun to do it. Nothing more than that. Homestly i dont understand the reaction,, for me it was somthing nice and i appreciate it! .... Maybe i shouldnt write in this forum, now i dont know, but the forum in spanish doesnt have the information that can be found in this one. I am sorry to cause all this.
@karla please, no need to apologize! You've done nothing wrong and I, as well as the other regulars, welcome you to the EB forum
The issue arose due to theHudd's combative attitude regarding the forum rules.
By the way, and since all this started with a comment about Mexicans in Jeddah..... Only last week 6 Mexican men I know had left Jeddah for good after being here for almost 4 years.
COMBATIVE ATTITUDE? What, by sending a greeting to a member in her own language?
You people should grow up - shouldn't have one rule for the Brits and a different one for the French.
As regards what I WAS commenting upon before being upbraided by some French person who does not even live in KSA - has anyone actually found out if Silver Sands is purely for Westerners (as one of the contributors says) or if it is open to all, including locals who pay the entrance fee (as another contributor says)?

You need an attitude adjustment. The 'French person' you refer to is the owner of this site and as such, it's his right to make the rules.
Thank you aliecat!
And to ahmadaq too bad i never met them... I posted a question asking about mexicans living in jeddah on the spanish forum but no mexican ever reply to it
Thank you both!!

With your excellent English, Karamelia, I'm sure you're quite comfortable--and definitely welcome--in this English speaking forum.
BTW, a way to check out members according to home country is to click on the 'Network' link. Registered members from Mexico are HERE. They may not be active on the forum but after you've participated in the forum a bit, you'll be able to PM them (you are required to participate first in order to eliminate spammers).
Good luck!
Oh Alliecat!! Thank you very much for the link and your nice comment about my english! I would look for them there!! Thanks again!!
Ok if most the gentlemen are done acting like 10 year olds.
I would really like to know which beaches are truly "Western." As an American and mother of 2 girls I would like to know which beaches I can go to with my daughters & not have to wear an Abaya as I am more likely to get in the water with them than my husband.
thehudd wrote:...or if it is open to all, including locals who pay the entrance fee (as another contributor says)?
Locals (and arab males in general) are not allowed into the Silver Sands unless they are royals or they are friends of the owners (who obviously are Saudis).
Similar La Plage - ladies must take off abayas before the gate.
Sheraton beaches (there are three of them), Dream Beach, Blue Beach are mixed (but still bikini-friendly), they and more suitable for the divers, and some have separate pools for females.
However there are no rules in KSA so everyone may have his own experience, and different on different days.
The best option - a boat trip to the sea with a group of friends.
I lived in Dammam for a year. How do you and your wife have a private pool might I ask? I am curious. You do you rent or own or have roommates?
@ Pandabay > I regret but this topic is very old (2013).
If you wish to interact with active members, feel free to create a new topic on the Jeddah forum.
Thanks,
Priscilla
