Post new topic

Is it true that a New Law has come out that cars need to pay Road Tax? Can anyone further explain more on this and how to comply? Where to pay etc?  Thanks much

Yes i can confirm this. I own a new Sorento and the yearly road tax for my car is 3.5mill VND. Just paid it last week so it takes affect as of now.

Easy there, Budman.  Who are you calling loco?  Want me to bite you??? :unsure

On a more serious note, most of the locals on here are of the student variety.  They don't own cars.  Of the ones that do, gee, they pay no silly road tax.  Their parents do!  As for the ones that actually pay for their own cars and taxes, they either are tired of the government's shenanigans and don't follow, or they just can't write anything more than the matters of the hearts.

Personally, I don't waste my time following these things either.  First of all, I don't have a car here, yet.  Second, even if I have my car, there is no sense in following these feeble policies.  What can I do, aside from breaking out my wallet?  Who can I appeal to?

This is a normal part of owning a car in Vietnam, just like the traffic, you have gotten to be prepared for it.  Roll with the punches, Amigos.  :proud

Thanks guys. Just understood that this matter, according to Authorities, is by self awareness (unquote). They have no clue how to punish anyone yet if you do not pay this 'Road Maintenance Fund Contribution'. But, as a morally upright expat, I chose to pay and had just done that over the weekend. This is Vietnam and I am aware Laws can pop up any moment, just like new flowers bloom in Spring. For motorcycles , this has yet to be enforced. After all, everyone uses the roads and whether its fair to help upkeep them, well, to each his own.

Sploke77,

The last time I followed these things was a couple of years ago, when they wanted to limit each household in Saigon to 1 motorbike, to alleviate traffic.  Dude, that was too brilliant for me.  I threw in the towel.  So now, and for a foreseeable future, just to keep my head on straight, I just make sure that payment is necessary and the amount is correct, then out come the wallet...  You will join the rank of Budman and Ashard (guys who went cuckoo) delving into these thing.  Sanity worths many more Dongs, my friend.

Hi Wild_1, since you called me 'friend', may I , one day come over to visit you in Can Tho and see what you do with those coffee beans? A good lesson outdoors for my kid too?? Cheers

Sploke77,

I am presently back home, in sunny southern California.  I won't be back to Vietnam until the middle of September.  Hey, drop in anytime after that, just let me know a couple of days in advance.

By the way, you no longer have to pay a toll fee crossing the Can Tho Bridge.
