Websites blocked from US?

Are there any problems streaming online radio stations from America in Egypt?  One of the websites I like to listen to is this one: http://www.kfi640.com/main.html    Can someone click the link and see if it's blocked or if you can stream the audio? It's a talk radio station out of Los Angeles.  If websites are blocked, do you use a proxy server or anything to get around it?

Thank you in advance

I believe that your problem is with your OS, windows vista usually gives that problem a lot, try to update the Os the more times that you can, and i believe it will solve the problem. if this is not your OS tell me witch one is and I'll help.

The link works fine.  The ISPs here are ADSL and give pretty good download speeds.  If you have someone in the States with cable and high speed internet who will let you connect to their system you should check out Slingbox.  I have one on my son's network and can watch (on my computer, or TV if hooked to my computer) local cable TV from home - I just have to figure the time difference, which is +9 hours from West Coast time.  No impact on what he's watching or anything at all.  It uses a bit of his bandwidth but he says he wouldn't even know it's there and he does some major bandwidth gaming and stuff.  I also watch TV shows on hulu.com and download videos from Netflix.  You can manage the buffer size and I just set mine to max, so it buffers enough of the show that I very seldom have any jerky action or anything. I also have Orbit Satellite TV and can watch the newtork shows on it, like Good Morning America, etc.

Well, so much for hulu and netflix - we just changed ISP's and those are blocked.  I talked to both of their customer support sections and they tell me that the agreements are being re-negotiated.  Hopefully it won't be a long process but I wouldn't hold my breath.

thanks for the info campingguy...have you ever thought of using a proxy server? If you search for them on google, there's one called "hidemyarss.com" without the "r" and their website says they can make your computer/ip think you're in san diego or one of several locations...i'm just trying to find out if it works...could be your answer

Good info - we'll check it out!

Forget about American Radio Station in Egypt!
I invite you to listen Nile FM, 104.20!  Really enjoyable!
I have forgotten my dear Kiss Fm from my country with it!

Camping Guy: What is your experience with Internet providers in Egypt. Im curious being a IT professional (and moving to Cairo in Aug), and want a fat bandwidth for my home connection (I download a lot of torrents, and to watch NFL online as well. Any advice about which provider is trouble free as far as “What you pay for is what you get”. For example a 8MB connection actually downloads at 8mbs.

Also for those interest in Hulu and the like, a VPN service (about 40-60 a year) is best instead of a proxy server, because free proxies will not handle video.

Thanks for the info on VPN vs. Proxy!  I've been digging and there seem to be a number of advantages of the VPN route, especially security from spam, hackers, etc.

When you get a flat here you'll want to get one that is wired for telephone since DSL is the fastest option for households.  The standard upload/download speeds seem to be 512/1026 Kbps but higher speeds are available.  I've used several different providers and have noticed little difference other than how fast they respond to trouble calls.  For a list of providers go to: http://www.livinginegypt.org/NewtoEgypt … fault.aspx - Most of the providers listed have links to their websites where you can get additional info.

Thanks campingguy for the link to the ISP.

Yes VPN are a much better option over free proxies, especially for video sites -- thus the cost.
I know that the Pirate Bay (since being shut down) has converted its servers and hardware to set up a top of the line VPN... Although I have no personal expereince with their current service, I have worked with some of their top level Techs in the past. All stand up good people... http://www.boingboing.net/2010/01/20/pi … -goes.html

Ive been globe bouncing for a while, and the IP restrictions for netflix, hulu, pandora etc can limit digital media consumption drastically (which could be a good thing as well, right?)

I get your drift, but I still want to be able to stream my XM satellite radio... If I accept my job in Cairo, that will be one hard thing to leave behind... :D
