After visiting Istria last September which was OK but not fantastic, what is it like living in Bulgaria areas like Bourgas, Sozolpol. Varna, Plovdiv etc. I know it's cheap out there, but some freinds of ours bought an apartment near Bourgas and on their last visit there she was mugged by a gang. Do Brits and other expats have to watch themselves in Bulgaria? Would rather consider Montenegro or Croatia, but Bulgaria for it's varied wildlife and scenery. Can't make out why it's so cheap there, but saying that I've never been there yet.

I've read there is a good job market out there compared to other countries in SE Europe.

Pretty much everything is crazy cheap in Bulgaria, so don't let that fool you into thinking that there is something wrong with the pricing. Bulgarians earn a lot less than people from western countries, so I guess it makes sense. For example,if I were to buy food for the whole day, I would need no more than 1-2 pounds(if I were from the UK)

When it comes to being mugged - it's unfortunate that your friend got mugged, but I doubt that it happens often. Or at least it hasn't happened to anyone I know...in general Bulgaria is not an "unsafe" place to be.
