E-Mail Scam / Heads Up

Post new topic

Ashard Deen

Hey Guys,

I wanted to mention this as two friends of mine got scammed for some big bucks, here's how it works:

1.The scammers hack into your account and sift through e-mails.

2.They find e-mails where payments are being discussed for a particular transaction.

3.They create an identical e-mail with slight difference by registering a similar domain. For eg if my company if say AMW Motors they create one under AMW Motos.

4.They then forward the hacked e-mail with the new domain and add their own bank account. Since the thread already has the past discussion on payment and the address appears legit payment is already made.

i realize there are many ways this can be avoided, i am not here to talk about that. This is a heads up as it has happened to my friends already. They believe they are part of the 419 scammers and not originating from Vietnam.

Cheers,
Ashard

Thanks for the head up, Ashard.

By the way, where did that Anatta guy run off to again?  ;)

Ashard Deen

I've no clue bud, i took a sabbatical from here too. Are you back? holler if you get to HCM again.

I will be back in a couple of weeks.  Hey man, I had nothing to do with it!

Let me go find Anatta...

You sure take a lot of time off, don't you?  It must be nice.

Wild 1 really? i meant i was not on Expat.com, you on the other hand have been gallivanting around SFO for god knows how long. Must be nice being you in fact when i grow up i want to be just like uncle Howie.

Hey man, I was on official business.  Yeah, officially tasting the qualities of the American steaks and beers, officially checking to see if the California beaches are cool enough...  Lots of official matters, as you know.  You should have come here and assist me, yeah?

Wild_1

I was also officially investigating to see if Anatta is involved in this email scam.

I will inform you of my official findings shortly.

I'll have to revert back to off-line e-mail program like Outlook. Used to be able to get hotmail in my outlook program but when that stopped I started getting e-mails online.

It's funny i gave a heads up but we got fleeced in HK. Just a reminder to everyone, be careful when people / vendors change account numbers over the e-mail. This scam is still very much alive and going strong.
