Hey Guys ,

I am currently living in Scotland, Aberdeen and Im thinking about to move to Malta next summer. Ive been there for a holiday and I just simply fall in love with the island. I know that being a tourist and living there is absolutely different so i would love to get some help how is it working there.
Im working as an assistant manager in a busy restaurant and i really want to continue to work in hospitality in the future. Ive read in other blogs that get a waiter job is easy in Malta but what about those people who thinking about it as a profession? Being a manager of a restaurant or a hotel?
How much is the average salary, flats lets say in the city centre : Valletta or in Sliema?
Basically my big question is that is it worth for to move to Malta from Uk?
All of the answers are big help to make my decision, and thank you for in advance.

Livia :)

If you want to work and progress to management level in the hospitality industry you will need to be able to speak Maltese.
Wages, rental costs etc have been covered lots of times on the forum.

Hi Livia,

working as a waiter will pay around the minimum wage of ca 5 €/hour. As already has been said , working in restaurant management will require speaking Maltese as you will have to negotiate with suppliers, customers and other service providers.

The same usually applies to work in hotels unless you are working at top level of an international hotel brand.

There are a few other jobs for English speakers that pay more like the HSBC call centre but most better paid jobs are in Igaming where you need to be a native speaker of one or more non-English languages and or in IT. Even there you are often looking at salaries of around 1200 €/year depending on your qualifications.

Whether it is worth it or not to move to Malta depends on your personal situation, reasons for moving and other things. What makes you want to relocate to Malta?

If your job of assistant manager comes with a decent wage package and you can live at a decent level  in the UK I would be very careful about giving that up.

Cheers

Thank you very much for your answer.
As you said i have a decent life in Uk, with good job and good opportunity but (coz there is always a but :) ) I am missing the sun. Maybe its sounds silly and not important at all but i grew up in a country where there was actually summer and sunshine. In here everything is grey, no sun depressing. At the first couple years i thought i might get use to it but i did not. Just got worse. Of course i would like to try myself somewhere else as well :) Although i am a bit scared to move somewhere with blind eyes...

Where was it that you grew up?

I am originally from Hungary. I moved to Scotland when i was 22 to try myself and obviously so much more chance in here then at home. I dont want to move back to Hungary because of the economical issues so i would love to work somewhere else where, the language is english and maybe better weather :)

ricky

Hi Livus,

the flaw in your reasoning is that English is the language in Malta. It is not ! Maltese speak Maltese and do business in Maltese!

The weather is ok in Malta, that is true-)))

Cheers

Szia Livia,

I am a native Hungarian, although I have never lived in Hungary. I know quite a few Hungarians who moved to Malta after working in UK or Ireland for the same reasons (sun and sea). If you do not mind downgrading financially and working as a waitress without the possibility of promotion then you are going to enjoy Malta otherwise it is going to be a big disappointment.

As ricky mentioned it Maltese speak Maltese, English is widely spoken but for hospitality management positions you need Maltese. Igaming companies looking for foreign speakers, but Hungarian language is not in demand, call centers servicing the UK market are mostly looking for native speakers

I see that Hungarian is spoken in Montenegro, perhaps that could be considered as geographically it may satisfy your need for a better climate?
Austria too is very nice and Hungarian is also spoken there. In the right areas it has a lovely climate.
