Hello All-
Great to find this forum...! A job opportunity may be taking me and my fiance to Lebanon in May, we have some questions. The US Dept. of State has recently updated their travel warning for Americans in Lebanon with some dire wording. We are wondering how safe it really is for us Yankees there. Many of our family & friends here in the States are convinced that we will be kidnapped & murdered upon our arrival. I don't sense that Beirut is any more dangerous than any big city, but what is the reality?
Also, what is the situation with communication, are iPhones etc. the norm there? How about computers & peripherals? Expensive? Do most apartments, etc. prohibit pets? (cat) Can you get M&M's there?
We are looking forward to it...!
Hi Strueblood,
With regard to safety, there's less petty crime and harassment here than in many European capital cities. Of course the risk of fighting or war is higher but even in that worst scenario, conflict is usually limited to specific small areas between specific groups and the locals know very well which areas to avoid and which areas are very safe still, depending on the situation.
Also tourists are not a target, unlike some incidents in North Africa. People caught up in violence here are either people who fight themselves or politicians, or more rarely people in media. Just being American is not enough to make you an interesting target ;-)
Jounieh is somewhere people go if ever there is fighting, so you should feel safe there. I feel very safe in Beirut and the only thing I really look out for is taxi drivers (just because you really put yourself in their hands, not because they are necessarily dangerous!).
As for techy stuff, availability is ok (I bought my laptop and printer here). Imported items can be more expensive. High speed internet and mobile communications are more expensive than Europe due to poor infrastructure.
For a few more impressions feel free to read my posts on staring, etiquette, business, supermarkets and so on at gingerbeirut.com.
All the best with your plans,
Georgia
I arrived a month ago and feel safe here, walking around on my own (at night etc) is no issue (in beirut) but you do need to keep an eye on the political situation. My internet connection was $200 or so and $50 a month for usage, iphones are not really worth it here due to poor wireless or the need to pay to use it, i got a local sim for $50 and top it up with $50 a month but there are cheaper ways of doing this. Good luck with the job and your decision....
