Hi guys,

Planning to cook some chili beans this weekend. Would really appreciate if anyone of you guys could advise me where I can buy the following ingredients in HCMC:

1.    Bush’s Baked beans / Chili beans
2.    Hunt’s Diced tomatoes
3.    Chili powder

Thanks

Mandy

Blimey, I've always used any baked beans I come across and fresh tomatoes and maybe a little puree if needed.
By the time the chilli powder goes in, you're not going to notice the other flavours that specifically, well not if you like them to kick :D

Thanks for your response. I did try other brands or even fresh many times and noticed that my chili beans never come out right. I must have Hunt's and Bush's :)

Hi Mandy,

You can try Annam Gourmet, 16-18 Hai Ba Trung in D1

Or Phuong Ha 58 Ham Nghi, also in D1

I'm not sure if I saw Bush Baked Beans, but they might have them. The other 2 should be easy to find.

I would have brought some over for you had I known as I just got back from the states and brought back about 75 pounds worth of groceries.

Hope that helps!

Thanks Jerry. I have been to those stores but they dont carry Bush's. Tried other options but never worked out right :) look like i will have to wait for my next visit to the states which is not till Christmas :)

Are you using paprika, cumin, oregano, and other ground peppers (other than chili)? I used to cook chili without a lot of fancy spices (I didn't want to buy them), but I think it tastes a little better with additional seasonings.

I agree that you simply can not beat Bush's beans.

You can use any type of pinto or kidney beans.

Jo Lui's West Side Chili
Whole tomatoes
Chopped onions
Ground beef (you can use sliced or chopped pork, chicken or beef)
Beef stock for beef chili only
Tomato juice

Sautee the onion in E-V Olive oil, remove
Brown the beef, remove

Make the stock with the tomatoes, beef stock, tomato juice. Taste it
Add the onions and low simmer for 45 minutes
Add Some
Dried oregano
Cumin
Cinnamon
Ground cloves

Chopped red pepper
Chopped jalapeño peppers
Crushed dried red pepper

Be careful, easy to put in but hard to take out. Do a little at a time wait and re-check. For folks who want it hotter, chop some extra jalapeno peppers separately

Keep the consistency between a soup and a stew. The beans will keep absorbing the liquids. Use
Beef stock or
V-8 juice
Beer
Tomato juice

Add the beef
Add the beans

Low simmer 30 minutes and taste it

Check consistency

Add a cup of a good Burgundy per quart (goes in last)

Enjoy
