Temporary Residency

Hello,
I have looked throughout the forum, but I can't find any recent posts that relate to my situation.
6 months ago I decided to student teach/ intern at a private school in Malta. I am a full time student and citizen in the US. Before arriving I tried to extend my visa. I contacted the embassy of Malta, the Consulate of Malta, and various other people. From that I received a lot of different information. I decided to go with the advice I got from the Consulate of Malta- which told me to go to Malta and apply for a temporary residency.
Fast forward to now. I am not here in Malta. I have gone to the Department of Residency 3 different times. Each time I have been sent away. The first they told me I didn't have the correct insurance, so I bought new insurance. The second I was told that I shouldn't be applying for a residency, but rather extend my visa. They sent me to the police station that deals with immigration. When I got to the police station, they said they don't deal with that and sent me back to the Department of Residency. I then called the department of Residency and they gave me a number to call in order to extend my visa (not sure what I was calling). She yelled at me and said if I wanted to extend my visa I would have had to do that before I arrived (which I tried to do). She then told me to go back to the Department of Residency and apply for a residency.
Yesterday I went back to the residency office, and had every document that I needed ready. When I got to the man he told me this is not where I need to be (I was in the non EU line). I tried to explain my situation but he kept telling me to come back in the morning (it was the morning at the time). I told him I didn't understand and then he said it wasn't his problem that I couldn't understand him. He then proceeded to ignore me.
I apologize for this long story, but I am very frustrated and upset with the situation. I only need to stay until January. I understand that with a temporary residency you are supposed to be here for a year, but it seems I have no other option. I have tried to contact the US embassy in Malta but they won't help. I'm guessing I should try to make an appointment with the Department of Residency but I heard that could take months.
If anyone one has any advice on my situation I would really appreciate it.
Thank you!
Courtney

Hi Courtney,

you have to apply for temporary residency in Malta if you want to stay longer than your (I presume 3 month Schengen visa). A Schengen visa cannot be extended and you are not allowed to work. As a temporary resident you are not allowed to work either but have to show that you are self-sufficienct money-wise for the time you stay. Usually voluntary work , even unpaid, is consider as being 'work' and requires a permit for non-EU citizens.

The correct way to do what you are doing is to get the private school to apply for a work permit. But that could prove difficult to get. If you succeeed you can then apply for oridinary residence which is given for as long as your work permit is valid or for the maximum of 1 year.

How long is your visa still good for ? Don't let it expire as you will get into trouble . To have a school apply for y work permit your visa status has to be correct and legal.

If you are in the Sliema area we could meet for a coffee to discuss the issue.

Cheers
Ricky
