Hello,
I have friends who live in Narvik, Nordland. One is a Swedish citizen and her husband is American. They live in Narvik. My friend works in home health care and is well known and thought of in her town. She has invited me to come out to live and is trying to help me find a job as a carer for the elderly and disabled. She thinks that if I have a job offer that I can stay there and apply for a work permit from Norway.

Does anyone know if this is true or not. I do speak and understand a little Norwegian and find the language pretty easy to learn. I have some medical training also.

                      Takk, Lydia

Hi Lydia,

Your friend is right.  American citizens can stay in Norway for 3 months as visitors without a visa, or for 6 months as job seekers without a visa.  Once you have an offer of employment in writing, you just file an application with the police department for a work permit which will allow you to stay in Norway for the length of your employment contract.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Carmen

Carmiewu,

Thank you for your reply! I had thought that it was only true for EU citizens. I am going to Narvik in October and will be there 3 weeks to look for a job and then have to come back home to get my dogs.

                           Har det bra, Lydia
