Weekly Groceries Spend?

Post new topic

gabrio

hello guys,

wanted to ask (if anyone wants to share, that is), how much you spend in groceries per week... I have been checking things here and there and it seems that for 2 people we are spending approx. 150€ / week. We are trying to get organic as much as we find, fresh fruit and veg, meat and fish too.

This includes daily lunch for me at work with a variety of snacks that I eat throughout the day too.

So in a month, totals up to 650€.

The ironic thing is that back in London, for the same money we would buy everything in Waitrose (one of the best supermarkets)and 100% organic (meat, fruit, veg, etc).

Is that considered "normal" for Malta? Considering they need to import 80% of things here?

many thanks
Gabrio

20euro per day is far too good for a normal shopping if you are not hooked on cigarettes wines beers etc

we don't drink, don't smoke so none of the above :-) just eat and drink healthy.

thats about € 8000 a year, which is not far short of what many families annual income is, and is very high for Malta

Hi Gab,

I am so down the other end of the scale...I am a single mum of 3 kids under the age of 10 and at full time university and like George said, your shopping bill is more than my whole annual income!
If I had 50 a week for food I would feel rich lol but that is why I am back at uni and the main reason for me doing it, wanting to be able to afford to eat healthy.
With that in mind, I will still only have an income of 12,000 a year and personally would not know how to spend 150 a week on food!
Our diet is pasta and rice, a very Maltese diet I guess and cheap. We very rarely eat meat. My diet would probably stay the same, I would just buy the healthier options ie wholewheat pasta and I would be buying more fruit and veg but not organic....One step at a time lol!

Have you tried the T'Quali farmers' market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings? (6.30am to approx 11am) Much of their vegs has come out of the fields the night before & has wet soil clinging to it! Not sure how many of them claim to be organic farmers, but you have the choice of approx 20 different vendors to buy from. Some of it is what retailers in the UK would called 'ugly veg' but has tremendous flavour :)
We buy every 10 days or so (2 people)and  fill three very large bags with fruit and veg and it costs us a maximum of €20. Suggest you go at about 9.30am - before that you are liable to be trampled to death by the locals around the stalls... We too used to buy from Waitrose in London, excellent quality but tasteless in comparison to the T'Quali farmers produce.

We have been here about 6 months, We take out 500€ every 4 weeks for grocery/cleaning products etc. This also covers a takeaway, an evening meal out and drinks/lunch out each week.:) We eat well, plenty of fresh fruit and veg (seasonal) brought at local shop rather than van. Meat or fish everyday, again local shops. You may need to shop around and ask locals where they shop.

1000 per month, but only buying "good" food (for 2 people)

Actually my wife just told me 700 - 1000 depending on if we buy stocks or expensive stuff which you normally dont buy every month.
