This is important to me because I need to keep up my workout discipline and I don't want issue like this getting in the way. I don't want conflicts but I can't exercise without the fans, it's just too goddamn hot. And that isn't anything I can choose
Just wondering how long you've lived in VN and have you lived in any other underdeveloped countries?
What makes you wonder that Solo1? Cuz every posts of ChrisFox reads like a "I hate it here, the people suck here" post?
To THD & ChrisFox: Exactly, I did notice an underlying tone of animosity. I thought perhaps he was new to living abroad and dealing with cultural differences. I too have had many angry moments but for the most part just release it and let it go. We all have our breaking points and maybe these post points are his.
Chris: Are you a natural body builder or are you using enhancers? Sorry about combining two answers into one post.

When I returned to Aus after 10 yrs in southern NZ, I was fabricating steel in this small cubicle in a big workshop, it would often get over 40C OUTSIDE, so you could imagine what the temp would be inside this tin shed, ( when it go to 38C, ( sometimes by 10am ), the office girls would come around with ice lollies/quenchers/popsicles, etc ), I decided to set up a fan , so the wind would blow directly on me while working, only had to turn it away occasionally while welding, ( gas/mig ), other workers would wonder why I hardly sweated, and had no problem working long hours, But only 1 other followed suit?????? Maybe being true Aussies, they believe the more sweat you lose, the more room for BEER????

Once again, that's needlessly abusive. Sorry I don't spray sunshine in every post but if you peruse the posts here and keep count you'll see a lot more griping than anything else. So what. There's a lot to like here, but there are a lot of things that could be better with infinitesimal changes in behavior. Smoking, littering, careless driving, pushy behavior.
I opened this thread with a legitimate question. I honestly don't understand how anyone could exercise in this heat without needing the ventilation for the same reason I do. I know that people here get heatstroke too.
As for "the people suck," riddle me this. What percentage of tourists to VN come here a second time? What is the same metric for Thailand? How do you explain the difference? Y'think having a handful of lottery tickets shoved between your mouth and your plate three times in one meal might have something to do with it?

Oh I'm in agreement with you. There are times I hate it here and many times I think people do suck. I occasionally (maybe often) post stories about it but I don't frequently post it. Most of your posts implies you really hate it here so we often wonder why you stick around.
I've been involved in web forums and chats since 56k dial up days to know what people post online and what people will say to you in your physical face are 2 totally different things.
You can't progress if you don't complain. Keep posting Chris Fox. I was born in Can Tho and like to keep up to date on what is going on in Can Tho.

If you're talking about steroids, no, I'd never use anything like that. I don't even drink alcohol. I've been exercising since I was 18 with only a few breaks and my mood and disposition fall apart very quickly when I don't. I'm crazy strong but it's not a competitive thing for me though I had a few "alpha male" types here get really nasty when I showed up at the gyms. It was me who made the friendly overtures to break the ice.
Cultural differences. It's been pretty shocking to me, I had a lot of Vietnamese friends in the USA and never ran into the issues I've seen here. Most were soft-spoken and courteous. Most of my friends here are the same. But I realize now I wasn't seeing a real cross-section, and here in Cần Thơ there are a lot of uneducated people. I expected that, but not in a neighborhood like this.
If I really wanted to gripe, hoo boy, I could go on for days. The power outages, the dog thieves (we've lost two), the money-borrowing attempts, the baby-factories, the weird jealousies, the gossip, the stolen postage. I've mentioned a few things that bother or perplex me the most. I don't apologize for that, a lot of people have gripes.
There are a lot of things I like here. People have gone out of their way to help me learn the language, the food is terrific, and, when it's not strewn with plastic bags and empty cigarette packs, the scenery is beautiful.

Yes, I was talking about roids. I never have taken them either but I have know some guys who did. They really can effect one's behavior. I've lifted on and off my life also and it has really paid off now that I'm 62. Muscle has memory and it doesn't take much for me to bulk up. The biggest reason I don't join a gym here is for exactly the reason you state.
As I said before there are issues here that really piss me off too but it's where I choose to stay for now anyway. I didn't jump to any conclusions concerning your posts and for once I was considerate in my choice of words. I've butted heads before with my straight forwardness combined with sarcasm with a touch of f**c you disposition. Which contrary to khanh44's analogy about posters is how I am face to face. And yes I still have all my front teeth!!! Ha!!!
There is one guy at the Chợ Xuân Khánh gym I go to now who had been the strongest guy there, bad temper, and when I showed up lifting half again as much weight as he did, well, you could feel the tension. When I did my warmup by organizing the barbells from all over the room he'd make a point of scattering them again, and he started trying to use heavier weights as if he was in some competition with me. I am totally not into this, by the way.
Well, it happened. He went too far and dropped a bar on his eye. He sits up covering his eye surrounded by, well, morons who thought it was funny. I saw my chance, shoved the gawkers out of the way, went in and told him to let me see. How many fingers am I holding up? His eye was okay. I said a few things like it's going to be red tomorrow, are you okay, blah blah blah.
Next day, it's all smiles, mạnh khoẻ không, and he's gathering up barbells and telling others to put them back when they're done.
That lasted quite a while. Now he's getting twitchy about the fans.

That was some great entertainment back then. Why do I need a TV when Solo1 is on the prowl on Expat-Blog?
Can't believe I've joined this blog almost a year now. Seems like just yesterday Howie politely introduced me to this blog.
Well thanks for passing the time quickly with all those off the tangent postings. Been over 3 years since I've been away from my friends and family and in just 2 months I will be making new friends and starting a new family in Vietnam.

Congrat and good luck Khanh uhmmm, why dont you make a new thread on "how do you know about this blog"?!? Or "why do you enjoy this blog"?!?
Thanks. Can't remember the last time I started a new thread. I'm usually chiming in with my off tangent comments.
What's this topic about again? Oh yeah fans. Thinking what to say to be on topic but just drawing blanks. Why don't they have a/c's at gyms?

Keep watching as I am sure there will be a return feature presentation at any given moment!
Not sure what is this post about anymore. I don't try to be some wise kid to seniors but I have some silly thoughts.
1. I feel like some westerners do expect Vietnam to be a perfect country: cheap, good food, warm, sunny, no garbage, no smoking, clean water, nice people that not only help westerners but also let the westerners have what ever they want. Every country has its good and bad sides. Accept it if you cannot do anything about it, otherwise, move elsewhere! Show me a perfect country and I'll shut up! If there's one, what are you doing in Vietnam then?
2. What percentage of tourists come to VN second time and to Thailand is actually non of any westerners' business. Why? How would you feel if someone come to your house and say: "Heck, your house is terrible! Any people gonna visit your house the second time?" ?
3. A legitimate question should not start with words that can be considered negative, in this case "superstition" doesn't sound positive, nor neutral, nor like a question. It sounds more like a statement. Maybe could start with something sounds more like a question? How about "Why do Vietnamese believe fans are unhealthy?" I wonder what would happen if I might have a legitimate question, like: "Why America and Americans are being hated by many other countries?" ?
4. Back to the topic, are the fans in the gym industrial big size fans? Those make a lot of noise when they are on and blow extremely strong wind. And fyi, fans do add heat to the room! If you have a perfectly insulated room and you put an electric fan in it, then the room will get warmer. All the electricity that is driving the fan turns directly into heat.
So a fan does not cool the room at all. What a fan does is create a wind chill effect. What ppl talk about wind chill on a cold winter day, what they are referring to is how the wind increases convective heat loss. By blowing air around, the fan makes it easier for the air to evaporate sweat from your skin, which is how you eliminate body heat. The more evaporation, the cooler you feel. You should take lessons on how electric fans work! So while some selfish bastards pointing the fan only for themselves to enjoy some chill wind, the other people around will have to suffer from hotter wind. That's the reason of letting fans swing. Sharing is also a principle of life!
5. What the medicine student wanted to explain with pores is that when you sweat, your pores open excessively. One is normally tired when they sweat, and the body is also weaker + pores open + direct wind blows into your body through the pores = one can get ill. Not everyone though!
6. Not everything in life based on logic! Life itself also has no logic! Would you kill yourself?
7. I have heard and read so many wise words of men from developed countries but ended up living in an underdeveloped country and then they turned their heads around, saying "This country is f**cking underdeveloped!" but they still live in. I just don't understand why? Their countries are too developed for them? They have no place in a developed country so they have to find some in underdeveloped ones?
8. Oh, if you can't stand fan superstitions in Vietnam, I have solutions! Maybe you can go to A/C gyms? to somewhere that offers A/C gyms? If don't want to, then how about build your own gym at home and buy fans to put around you. Also no? How about move to some cooler countries (or back to your own country?) and go to gym there? I can only think of those as I mentioned above that I'm not smart.
And for the record, I don't mean to be angry at anyone, nor want to be a smart ass coz I'm not smart. But the tone of the posts triggered me! My post is too long maybe nobody reads it but thanks for reading anyway!

You can't beat the a good warm and fuzzy in the tummy hehehehe
I agree with point #5 of the long rant. You're opening up the first of 3 layers of immune system defense coupled with intense workout killing off some white blood cells, stressing your body and causing short term inflammation and now introducing some direct cold wind into your immune system that is already temporarily reduced has the potential to not be strong enough to fight of the normal everyday antigens, viruses, parasite, toxins and bacterias.
With that all being said I doubt the locals there considered any of the logic behind trung gio and weighing the risk and rewards of the body going into deep shock due to the body's temperature rising beyond normal 37 degree celsius forcing it to shut down in the form of fainting to protect itself.

Boy could I give THD his wish on this one!! But I think I'll just sit back and watch this HBO special presentation as I'm sure the show will continue after my program interruption
Oooh, I was just going to say: Awesome, time to get the popcorn. Ngan Khanh just launched an ICBM. And you detected that launch didn't you?

Oh I beg to differ, well said and well written. Good rant!
I wish more rants were written like this. You addressed your peeve without getting into anyone's face or calling out anyone specifically.
Did you see my rant a couple of weeks ago? It gave me a nice fuzzy feeling in my tummy after I was done.
That was great too!
My Kim used to close her eyes riding through intersections without lights and pray to Buddha. I soon put a stop to that!

I agree, I have asked and challenged the fan issue and no one could give me a scientific answer.
I use the fans so I don't faint.
The idea that the fan produces heat is just jaw-dropping, any idea (1) how little heat electric motors give off? They're like 99% efficient (2) how little evaporation makes up for that tiny bit of heat?
