Julien wrote:Hi guys, sorry for popping up like this.
Hope everyone is well, I am currently abroad, trying to find sponsors for 2014. I don't exactly know what happened here, but could we please just stick to the initial topic ?
I don't mind if you open a (how can I say) "related to nothing" thread on which we could talk about anything, but please, could you please avoid being off topic on this kind of thread ?
Thanks everyone for your comprehension and participation to the Expat.com project !
Cheers,
Julien
Nothing is off-topic here. But prohibited topics per Julien are still Religion and Politics....as well as offensive topics per the user agreements and code of conducts.
Hey man, I think Budman started one of these before...

Should have kept bumping it up. Apparently many members here have been in violation of netiquette by yammering off the topic so Julien suggested making another one of these. So now I have a permanent link to keep spamming people to go here and continue their conversation before a moderator comes down and hammers them.
I don't have a problem with people going off-topic because it builds camaraderie. But seasoned forum goers just want to scan a post's topic and read it, then go on to the next post. They really don't care and get annoyed to....say read about lirelou's real life account at the battle of Điện Biên Phủ (I wrote that to egg him on to reply to this post - NO, I wasn't there!), or ancientpathos' girlfriend problems, or boxing matches, but to me, it makes for a better Expat community experience since we all live far apart.
Answering questions about VISA extensions gets old.

Oooh, French, it sounds like...

So this morning I get woken up by the propaganda speakers. Not the usual morning news but this time it's a roll call for conscription notices. The speaker were calling out names of military-age young men to report for service. I thought it was cool and maybe will teach these kids some values other than racing their motorbikes in the middle of the night.

Probably only teach them that their uniform DEMANDS respect, but they still don't have to show any to anybody else??? Most are definitely not lacking in the self confidence department already.
( vanity department also, especially many young males )

As I understand it THD,
conscription here can be avoided easily if the youth in question is studying at University, has a young family or has parents with enough funds to 'pay out' their compulsory service time. It's a few million Dong.

So, you get propaganda speakers out in the boonies where you live? When do they start conscripting your local young men? I think since last year's "East Sea" row with China, the Vietnamese government has started to enforce it's mandatory military service policy for males. Before that, it was in place but people skirt by it by "enrolling" in college.
Visa questions are a hell of a lot more germane and important than 99% of discussions here. If the same stuff keeps coming up, then someone should do a sticky FAQ and keep it update as rules change.

In Tinh Ky it used to be 5am, every morning, but now only Mon/Wed/Fri, My French friend must be spewing , they just installed a new LOUD speaker a few metres from his house, ( maybe the local Cong An got sick of him whinging to them about not getting respect from young kids, etc ), I think being a Fisherman/Farmer must get you an exemption as well?, most seen to be that age. Haven't heard of anyone doing conscription around here, might have to find out more.

Maybe he was meaning unsubscribe to the early morning propaganda show, ( they come around on M/Bikes with loudspeakers here, during the day as well).
I was channeling the waiter in "Brazil":
"You have to say the NUMBER!"

I'm another. Software developer since 1986, paid since 1988, ten years at Microsoft, eight years writing servers, now writing for Apple devices.
And I trim my posts, and I don't do emoticons or images.

haha
If you look up internet netiquette, there are differing 'rules' from site-to-site but they follow the same theme: don't be an idiot and learn proper English.

Good luck demanding all interweb posters use correct English. There are educated folks and there are-wot u sez id rong. Imma do dat iz hew.
Where is THD, has he been banned as well?
ah that's why the forum has been quiet last few days or he's enjoying the Vung Tau beach.
If he's banned hope he contacts me would have liked to meet him and his orphanage temple.

I have his e-mail address , but I'll have to ask him first before giving it out.
bluenz wrote:Where is THD, has he been banned as well?
I'm still here. Actually was invited to a wedding party in Bình Thuận Province, the next province over. Just got back this afternoon then had to rush to my volunteer teaching gig at the temple. Did 3 classes back to back. The ABCs class had 45 students while the Basic Conversation English class had 25. The 12th grader/College Prep class had 5. I got a little annoyed since each class always has new students so I gotta rewind and teach the prior week's lesson, otherwise the new students would be lost.
I had to rewind even more when I found out some of the kids didn't know their numbers so the entire "ABCs Class" was to teach them how to count their numbers from 0 - 99.
But yah, today I did around 300 kilometers on my motorbike so a bit tired. Want to watch a boxing match so where's MIA2013?

Yah, except the beach is under construction. The Back Beach has had a massive stormwater drainage project going on for about a month now.
Tomorrow I will go check out two other orphanages and see if they have any babies. Then it might be cooler to do a convoy to multiple places run.
I should do a Fartbook thingy on this. Might be able to solicit donations that way.
