Coming in March 2014

Post new topic

PoshPB

I took early retirement this year and am looking forward to relaxing in the sun with my wife of 32 years.

We are looking for long term rental from March with a view to staying forever. A visit in Jan is arrange ( 12-26 ) to view and hopefully sort out a place for March.

Initially will be looking in Silema/St Juliens/Gzira areas until we find our feet and get into the swing of Maltese life.

I have been reading Expat-blog for a couple of months now and have found a lot of useful info.

So thank you all

Hi All,

Arrived for a look around last week and have today signed a lease for an apartment is Swieqi. Got rest of the week being a tourist before flying back to UK to sort out house for rent.

Returning for good? we hope at end of Feb

Thanks for all the advise so far, we will be back on no doubt with other questions

Hi Posh

How did you find the apartment? Did you use an agent, and if so would you recommend them?

I will be arriving in Malta at the end of Feb and i'm hoping to get somewhere permanent to live as soon as I can but with so many agents it's hard to know where to start  :unsure

Hope your move goes well and good luck for the future.

Kerry.

itsnowornever hi,

I'm no expert but we used Frank Salt in the Spinola bay office and they were fine. We got collected and taken around and were shown properties which were all within the categories and price range we specified. I have read on another thread not to use frank salt but we have had no issues at all.

Thanks for the info, it's useful to know.

Hopefully i'll find somewhere suitable pretty quick too

Good luck, there seems to be a lot around although of an initial list of 32 available, given by the agent ,we narrowed it down to 10 we wanted to view on the first day. Next day of the 10, 6 had already been let. Probably our own fault for leaving a day between seeing agent and starting viewing.

Hi,

I've arrived in Malta 3 weeks ago and I've spent 10 days visiting flats with different real estate agents.
For me the best one was Benestates and Perry.
In Malta most real estate agency rent the same properties.

Enjoy and good luck

never heard of benestates and perry..
i was with frank salt, simonmamo, dhalia, quicklets and another...
the best agent of the lot i had was Trevor borg(?) at Dhalia... he showed me stuff that was closest to wot i was after, and that was done over a few days without much anxiety nor lacksidaisiness...

the others would take me something like a ground floor apartment which was effectively floor below ground but with a terrace backyard in the open air, etcetc... another one took me to places that were absolute dumps then to places which were 100euro+ more than the max. amount i wanted to spend monthly... and another took me to a place in swieqi which he said was about 15min walk from beach (which was one of my required items) but it was like 35mins... haha...
almost all websites r not up to date, frank salts seemed most up to date, but i found that u really had to just knock on the door of the agencies in the general area u r after and give them a list of the real priority requirements u have, then go from there... and get used to seeing 9 properties with one agent in a day... :-))

Thanks Jules & Kolac

I've read positive reports about Dhalia on here before and I continuously look at all the agents websites and I see the same properties listed with most of them.  I intended emailing a few agents a list of my requirements shortly before my arrival with a view to making appointments to view properties when I get there, but I think i'll just visit them in person instead and see what's available 'on the day'.  :)

thats the best way.... the properties on all agents  websites are almost 100% not available

One agency that keeps very up to date and I can vouch for the owner's integrity is Quicklets.

Thanks Toon & Red

Checking out Quicklets now!

i found that frank salt had dates of availability on their website, whereas others did not (however if another agency sorted out a place then even this info would be a bit off)... their overall manner was a bit off-putting, but if they have what u r after then u just gotta push them a little... i did ! :-))
simonmamo has a plethora of stuff on their site but it seems rather redundant... was driven around places i wouldnt have bothered with if the price or pictures were shown to me beforehand...
quicklets seemed ok, but the guy running it is looking for employees i believe and he seemed extremely busy when i came in (whereas the big agencies can show u stuff immediately cos of their inventory and amount of agents, although it simply comes down to u walking into the apartment that u want rather than anything else)..
dhalia...  i called them due to recommendation on this site, but did not get the 2 names mentioned here... i got Trevor Borg in the Gzira office (but also looking after Sliema Swieqi areas etc)... they didnt have as big an inventory as others, but got back to me when i sent him a list of places from their website with info on when each one was available... quite consciencious... took me to handful of places over 4 day period which were the closest to my requirements... really was the best agent for me, just a matter of what the inventory is like...

Kolac

and at the end of the day, it comes down to whether wot u are after is available when u r after it... if u give it some time... about a week, minimum of 3 or 4 days to 10 days perhaps... potentially seeing about between 25 to 40 places (yes, u will zip around over 2 hours to about 4 or 5 places with one agent... couple times a day... we r talking short distances inbetween!! :-) )

also the manner within agencies amongst different agents is different...
for some u can give a list of ur requirements... for others it is best to find wot looks available on their sites and then send it to them asking to see it and if not, then something similar... at the beginning u need to do about 2 days of internet research (on a few agency sites pulling off what exactly u r after) whilst calling a few agencies/agents in the initial period, and then or even during this time get looking when the agent offers to show u stuff :-))  it does get a bit tough and frustrating at some moments, but u r trying to leave no stone unturned, as what u r after is also what many others want...
