Q for families in malta

Hi all,

It looks like most housing in malta is apartments with no outdoor space and open plan indoor space.

I was wondering how family life works in these kinds of spaces - we are in the UK and have a lot more indoor space and garden space for similar money but then our weather is miserable for a lot of the year so maybe its more 'needed'.

What do you and your kids do all day? Is it more of an outdoor culture so you need less indoor space? Are there good communal outdoor play spaces if you don't have gardens?

I was also wondering if you all live in furnished accommodation - everything we have seen online seems to come furnished

what tips would you suggest for finding accommodation that will make for a happy family, any must haves???

p.s. I'm quite amused by how many 3 bed apartments have 2 or even 3 toilets?? whats all that about ;) We could all be on the toilet at the same time - what luxyery!

You do indeed spend much more time outside. One of the big advantages of better climates.
I think the UK is the exception where toilets are concerned. In most other countries all houses have at least 2 or 3 toilets. Without wall to wall carpeting and sometimes even on multiple floors.. ;-)

In my opinion generally  maltese apartments are quite big, so the indoor space is plentiful.  It really depends on your expectation (and of course what you can afford financially). Previously we lived in Prague in a centrally located 50 m2 and it was  considered standard size by Czech standards. Here when I mentioned to the agents that we have two small kids they started to push 3 bedroom apartments and over 100 m2 floor space ( who on earth what to keep that kind of space clean and tidy?). Most of the apartments i have seen had a big kitchen/dining room/sitting room, long corridors and quite small bedrooms and at least two bathrooms.

There is not much green space or great outdoor playground for the kids due to the climate, but every town has small playgrounds and thanks to the weather they can be used all year around ( in the summer people tend to stay indoor during the day and go out in the evening, it is not unusual to be out  with small children even after 10 pm)

Hi, We moved from a 4 bedroom detached with garden etc etc to Malta.. After looking at over 50 aparments, We now live in a beautiful bright furnished 3 bedroom duplex apartment with a large patio and courtyard for the kids to play.. I have an area to dry my clothes outside also. We have been here 2.5 years and have no compaints about living in an apartment. My kids have made a den /playroom with some of the space downstairs which I think is cool. We are out and about most days with after school activities, swimming or just to the park for a scoot... Oh yes we have 3 bathrooms also!!! lol

Do all of you rent your accommodation furnished? or did you bring your furniture with you? I cant seem to find many if ANY apartments which come unfurnished

First time round we came with everything and found it extremely difficult to find an unfurnished place and these to be more expensive as the landlord factors in the cost of moving/storing his furniture. So second time round moving to Malta we sold everything and move into a furnished place.. A friend ours found the villa she wanted but it was furnished, the landlord said he would give it to her unfurnished, so the day they got the keys and moved in they realised their villa was now a 4 bedroom insteand fo 5 as the landlord stored all his furniture in the bedroom and locked it.. But still charged them the higher agreed priced for an unfurnished place, so place be careful.. Renting in Malta is totally different to renting anywhere else in the world!!!!! There is some available, we views a brand new unfurnished apartment in Tigne Point 4 weeks ago for 1300, so they are available just use the right agent...

LOL these are just the sort of things to be aware of and the list is getting longer and longer - whatever you agree to make sure it is in writing, witnessed and make sure you enforce it ...make it a condition of the contract that everything you want and asked for will be there and done to yOur entire satisfaction - because they will try it on,,,, dont give them the opportunity to do so  - PROTECT YOURSELVES

We negotiated and had some furniture moved out so we could bring some of ours over.

thanks for the replies. we think we will be selling our house and downsizing to a flat purely for letting out in the UK - so hopefully between the house sale and kitting out a flat to rent out most of our furniture will be accounted for.
