Desperate to connect with enlightened people with similar background

Hey, I'm fully aware that you are not necessarily looking for guys to hang out with.
I'm a returning Expat. I lived for five years in England and in a moment of weakness got persuaded to return to Germany for a job.
I'll be living in Karlsruhe soon. But I'm getting the jitters a bit, I loved speaking English on a daily basis and I hung out with mostly other expats here in UK.
I fear I might be missing that in Karlsruhe. Basically I'm desperate to connect with other enlightened people with a similar background.

Cheers
Tilman

HI Tilman,

Welcome to KA! When do you move here?

I agree, finding other english speakers is an added bonus when moving to a new country.

Keep me updated! I am always interested in meeting new people!

Gruß,
Lauren

First day today. :)

I would love to hang around more with other people with a expat background and speaking English on a more regular basis.

Heck, maybe I learn to love my people again quickly. I was only gone for five years. Maybe the damage done is not permanent. :)
But surely it's going to be fun hanging around with a more international crowd.

Hey :) your message sounds like we're in a similar situation.
My name is Celia, I come from Spain and I recently moved to Friolzheim, where I work as au pair. Friolzheim is kind of close to Karlsruhe.
Anyway, I lived in the US for a while, so my english is not that bad, my priority right now is learning German, but since this will take a while and I love meeting people anyways, I figured it would be good to get some english speaking friends, that way I won't lose my english. It's not super easy for me to move around right now (I don't have a car and this is a tiny village, so I have to manage my trips with the limited bus schedule), but I have free weekends, so I guess we would be able to figure something out :)

tilmanb

¡hola,

yea we should meet.  But you are right Friolzheim is a bit  off the beaten path.
And I'm starting a new job here, who knows how much time I will have. I guess there might be lots of socializing with colleagues and discovering the cities on weekends. :)
Let's stay in contact. Some day I will increase my travel radius.
Or let me know if you come over to Karlsruhe. I can show you what little I know of the city, but be warned I have always even a bad tourist guide if I know a place for years.

tilmanb

Aah, never mind. I just realised thst you where probably talking to Lauren.
It isn't very clear what is a reply to what.

lepi92

Hey! Well I was talking to her, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't meet you! Actually it is super convenient for me to get some native german speakers friends, but it's just so hard!! Honestly, my top priority at the moment is learning German, however friends are always a top priority in general, besides what's need in the current moment

tilmanb

Hehe, I understand what you mean.
I'm probably the worst German teacher. Both languages I speak, I learned by osmosis. And I fall back to English often if I struggle with people with less good German. Which is totally unfair if they want to learn. :-/ But it's such a hard habit to fight. :)
Let's stay in touch.

Hi Tilman - please note that we have created a new thread as from your post on the Germany Forum :)

Could you please explain why, in your opinion, only English speakers and/or Expats are "enlightened"?

Although I am a German living in Germany (after 15 years abroad), I speak more English than German here. We speak mostly English at home (not my wife's native language either, and my daughter is trilingual), most of my work is in English too (global role). Our circle of friends is very mixed.
Just take your intercultural lifestyle with you. It's not that difficult if you try!
